Just out of interest, what happens with a manual box when this cuts in, does it stall the engine or is there some Volvo magic that happens?

It stalls but restarts as soon as you press the clutch.

yes I do and always have done over the last 600,000 miles , when you have a low car and your eyes are at the same level as most stop lights its not a good experience , As I said It is only in recent years this has been a problem , people always used to use handbrakes and take their foot off the brake in traffic . Now people are so lazy .. they even want cars that drive themselves ...

I'm with Clan on this, it's how I've always driven, handbrake, neutral but now I'm in a geartronic I just leave it in drive with handbrake on. If I'm last in the queue I just keep a eye in the rear view and give a flash of brake lights if anyone seems to be approaching at speed.

Default V70 City Safe

So, getting back to City Safe......

I have a 3 year old V70, with City Safe turned on. It has activated twice, once at a mini roundabout with someone crossing in front of me, and once at the garden centre where I nearly ran into a hedge. (that was to test it!!)

Since then it has not worked. I have been back to the dealer 3 times to tell them it doesnt work. They assure me that there is no error showing on the computer, so it is working.

I am not convinced.

So I am going to set up an obstruction in the yard at my workshop and try it.

I believe you have to be under power, not coasting and not turning the steering wheel.

Any thoughts anyone?

Oh by the way, the dealer had an inflatable (VW Golf) but were advised not to use it. Bloody health and Safety

I have seen on one of the other sections on here (new v90?) that people are driving at 'flat-screen TV boxes, with or without foil applied, to check theirs.

Depending on what you mean by City Safety, my warning alarm and red lights on the dash come on most often when a narrow road ahead suddenly curves to the right or left and there is a car parked at the kerb in the middle of the curve - thankfully it doesn't slam the brakes on in that instance. It doesn't seem to take into account the steering angle of the car so thinks you are driving straight towards the parked car.

It is not a novelty to "test" It acts violently at the very last moment , there may still be a collision but the severity will be greatly reduced . It should never activate when you are driving around normally / I have been driving all sorts of volvos on a daily basis since this system was pioneered by volvo 10 years ago and I have never had one activate .. Trust it , the moment there is a problem you will get a message in the dash .

You will get a message! That's good. I dont want a message, I want the car to stop!

Novelty is not the word to use, it is an engineered test to prove the system works. Or not

How often do you check your airbags are functioning? Just trust that it works and remember...….You are driving the car, the car is not in control of you!
