Default throaty growl normal ???

Hi, just picked up my first ever Volvo v70 estate a few weeks ago, ive given it a full service including transmission oil change and its running like a dream. Its our run around car and being a large loader its great for all my smelly carp fishing gear. The concern i have is a week ago i had the cambelt changed using all volvo bits and now i have noticed a throaty growl when i give it some welly, its coming from under the bonnet not the exhaust and im wondering if one of the cams might be out by just a tooth. It sounds like it coming from the inlet side. ive had full checks done by computer and they are all clear, the cambelt sensor was also clear but if it was out by just a small amount i guess it wouldnt even pick it up anyway. its the 2.5 turbo 20 valve model which kicks out 193bhp. is this throaty growl normal on these ??? any advice welcome.

If the sound is different since you had the job done the cam timing could be out . but have a look at the air filter inlet tube see if thats located properly or missing altogether ...

Like you, I just got my 2003 V70 a few weeks ago, but mine is the 2.4.

I get the same growl from the same area, but only until it's hot.

I've had the exhaust checked, everything ok, and it was suggested I have a good look around the air intake. Not had chance yet.

Default growl

Hi guys, had a good look around car but couldnt find any lose hoses etc, even took car back to garage to check over newly fitted cambelt but that was clear aswell, gave car a 250 mile round trip today to pick up relatives for xmas and it still had the growl from under bonnet and on 2 occasions when sitting idle it gave a sort of cough and i noticed the revs drop slightly but for a very short time, about a second or so but picked itself up again, still had loads of power. it wasnt hunting on the revs. im wondering if the coil pack might be on the way out??? i had the car looked at the weekend but all the tests including live tests came back ok. im sure these cars dont have this growl as standard as they are pretty refined engines. any ideas???

It's not the top engine Torque rreaction bush broken is it? That would cause a noise from the bulkhead area when under power .

Hi, do you mean the engine mounting at the top, as ive replaced this with a poly one, its coming from the engine inlet side i think, its a bit hard to get a true location.

has this noise developed since you fitted the poly bush? Its not going to damp out the noise like a rubber one ..

Thumbs up

i like a throaty growl induction roar, my 850 has a nice tone when running right, if the car is running ok and the throaty growl is not a mechanical sound ie something mashing up i wouldent worry, several volvos i have been in have all had a roar of sorts, its that 5 cyl trait, all best theres a thought perhaps the car wasent spot on before the work was done, and now she is releasing her full potential, nice.

it started before i fitted poly bush, they are meant to be a all round better product than the rubber standard ones and they hold the engine alot tighter thats for sure. it dosnt explain why it dropped revs a couple of times, when i rev in neutral it sounds like its running great and the growl only seems to start when i start to accelarate.
