The 88 degs results in the temp gauge settling just below the warning white line and a superb heater. However, you MUST make sure the pipes are all in good nick because of the extra pressure, especially if it's the older system without an expansion tank. The very late B20's had a higher pressure system with a slightly different expansion tank top and cap. The white warning line is 90 degrees. I would limit this to winter use only and I see they're not for sale at Brookhouse but are available from the Swedish sellers.
The 82 degs results in the needle settling on the upper white line, so about 3/4 way up the gauge. Still a great heater and probably the best for all year round use. My cars generally only come out in the summer and I have the cool thermostats; my poor cars get a caning going up the steepest hills onto Dartmoor, so I like to think the 'stat is open as widely and early as possible! The gauge settles exactly half way. However, if I occasionally take the thing out at this time of the year, the heater is not at full potential resulting in the demisting being inefficient. At worst, by the time I get to the bottom of a long hill, it's gone below proper operating temp. It's a summer only thermostat.
