Default AWD propshaft centre bearings

One (possibly both) centre bearings on the prop shaft of my 2008 V70 AWD have failed. Volvo will only sell the complete shaft (for £££££££s). Does anyone know if the bearings are available separately and if so a supplier? I can't find anything for the V70 2008 + MY on line.

Thanks.

Hi,

I would check your Volvo parts department or one of the guys at FRF: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=57125

I remember being told I needed to replace both wishbones on my V90 as the bushes were worn. Cost of £450 each.
Same dealer, bought the bushes and got them fitted elsewhere for less than half the cost of one wishbone!

Cool Prop-er job!!!

Evening Grubby Mitts, If you can't get the bearings from Volvo parts dpt. Have a look for a firm that reconditions/repairs/balances prop- shafts. and give them a bell. Good Luck!

Regards,Keith.

Hi Des - thanks for the reply. I've had a word with FRF - very helpful but they say that the bearings are not available separately - it's the whole shaft at £1,200 approx. or nothing.

It looks like I may have to search the breakers yards - I don't like fitting salvaged parts but the cost of a new shaft may be prohibitive.

Hi Keith

I have found a prop shaft specialist who claims to be able to recondition the old unit, so bearings must be available from somewhere (!). Either that or the recon work will be a bodge. You're right, though - a reconditioned shaft (just over half the price of a new one) may be an alternative if I can't find one at a breakers.

The noise from the old bearings has become hideous (I'm just waiting for the "bang") so the car's now off the road until I find a solution.

Hello GB. Can I suggest you try ringing a couple of main dealers, cars and trucks, near you, service dpt.would probably know or wk.shop. Ask them who they use? do they know the firm you have found? are they any good? best not to ring during the "rush hour" if you get my drift.

good luck,Regards,Keith.

Further to that look for a hgv commercial garage, these boys know where things can be rebuilt.
My sprinter prop went from West Wales coast to Birmingham to be rebiult, 4 day turn around as every uj and bearing was changed, had it been just the centre bearing it would of been 2 days.
40k miles later and still good. Cost was £450 ish as compared to £1100 for new.

I decided to replace the whole shaft with a salvaged unit from a breakers (mostly on grounds of cost) - and it arrived last week. The part number of the shaft on the car is 30787840 but the part number on the replacement is 31259593. They look very similar except for one of the intermediate mounting brackets but this looks like it can be swapped over. Before I start taking things off for access to remove the old one (which then renders the car non movable) I am trying to find out if the part numbers are interchangeable or if the earlier one has been superceded by the later one.

Is anyone with access to a parts database able to enlighten me please? And yes, I really must bite the bullet and get VIDA!

Thanks.

Have just spoken with Volvo. They have these listed as two separate and apparently non interchangeable parts. Whilst I wait to hear from the yard which supplied the replacement I will take the old one out anyway - if the replacement doesn't fit I'll have to bite the bullet and get the genuine Volvo one (££££££ - ouch!)

Well, the old shaft is out and putting it alongside the replacement, the new one is about 50mm too short in the solid centre section between support brackets.

Pretty "pxxxxd off" with "Parts Gateway" for supplying the wrong part as you might imagine, so back to square one.

I assume the car is driveable as FWD only and the shaft removed?

In case anyone else is tempted part numbers 30787840 and 31259593 are NOT interchangeable.
