Gates are suppliers to lots of manufacturers and probably made the belt your care came out of the factory with.

Some Gates kits are actually more expensive than genuine Volvo.

I've used Gates and Dayco aftermarket belts on various cars over the years with no problems. I think if they'd used a "Continental Direct" (NOT Contitech, I've heard they're good too!) or some other off-brand I'd be concerned but the Gates belt kit ought to last the recommended interval.
Having said that, if Volvo original are known to last longer and aren't much more in price then I can't see why one wouldn't fit one. Question for CheshireD5 here too, what about the pulleys is causing failures on aftermarket belt kits? Gates and Dayco belt kits use good quality items from SKF or INA from my experience with them.

The information is also there for anyone else reading in the future. Quote:
The Volvo kit uses INA pulleys but as you know, INA and other manufacturers will make different pulleys for the same application so longevity may be affected. For a £20 saving over 10 years though, to me, it's really a no discussion decision.

I work as an independant and we use gates kits on everything we get through the door. They are the best quality after market kit going. Never had an issue with a gates kit, anything other I wouldn't entertain!
While the genuine Volvo parts may be good some other makes such as vw's with their **** quality water pumps and **** quality tensioners I'd prefer gates to genuine! I wouldn't loss sleep over it. I use gates on my own cars and I'd bet your indie does too.
