New member - old question regarding headlights?
Hi All,
Just joined the forum as I'm helping out a friend who has a 2006 S60 D5 which needs a little work for the MOT. I'm ok with most things so far but it has factory fitted Xenon/HID headlights and has failed because the lens is so fogged up it's stopping a proper beam getting through. My usual cars are VWs with plastic lenses so I'm more than familiar with the old toothpaste and clearcoat method of sorting this but on this occasion the fogging seems to have been caused by the heat from the beam and is on the inside of the lens hence virtually unreachable. Been looking around on eBay and seen a few scary prices for second hand slightly foggy headlights if they are Xenon type so I wondered if a non Xenon one would work if I was to swap the Xenon internals over? They are much more common and cheap so would save him a fortune! Anyone got any ideas? Had a look at a few and they appear the same from the outside. I'd love to hear that the part number for the housing itself is identical, but it's never that easy... is it? Thanks, Ted |

Are the lenses definitely plastic.
My 2003 V70 with factory fitted Xenons have glass lenses with wipers. Have a look at skandix.de My concern for the MOT is do they check the auto levelling of Bi Xenon headlights, a component of which is on the near side rear control arm. Non 4 C Jude |

Hi,
Yes definitely plastic, no wipers but they do have washer jets. Take a look here for MOT regs: https://www.mot-testing.service.gov....ml#section_4.1 Ted |

As far as I'm aware internally it's the reflectors which are different between HID and Halogen lights-actual bulb holders may differ too but don't know that for certain.HID equipped cars don't have to have wipers but must have washers.
