Temporary puncture repair

RAC guy repaired a puncture in my partners car and said he had put a temporary plug in
What I need to know is, is this plug somet that can be removed and replaced with a more permanent plug

Trying to remove a plug is only likely to make matters worse.

As far as I know any repair must be to the appropriate British Standard to make it legal for use on the road. This is basically preparing the inside of the tyre and then gluing a plug and patch, that looks a like an umbrella, on the inside of the tyre and through the hold in the tread. If done properly this can be a permanent repair. Any thing near the sidewall cannot be repaired, only punctures in the tread pattern away from the edge.

Best get it checked out by a tyre specialist to be on the safe side.

The repair was in the tread away from the side wall but I would be surprised if the RAC has put in a temporary one if this cannot be replaced appropriately

Temporary repairs are made using a strong needle & string insert that blocks the hole . Any tyre fitter should have no problem removing the temporary device & bonding in a suitable permanent repair from inside the tyre .

The only real stumbling block would be if a sealing foam or liquid had been used to augment the repair . No repair can be made to a tyre that has used these sealants , as you have no means of assessing any additional leaks / damage .

Hi dingov70, I can add to what you said about tyre sealants.

I keep Holts Tyre Weld in my boot (no spare) because it is water based and the tyre depot can flush it out with water. Kwik Fit will no longer repair a puncture where any type of sealant has been used but their technical bulletin refers customers to National who did mine recently without a problem after I had re-inflated with Tyre Weld.
