Improve emissions / decrease tax bill any fixes?
Hi all, maybe oversimplifying this one and have searched around with no definitive answer yet.
My question is, are there any fairly quick fixes I can do to lower the emissions from my D5 engine in order to reach the more up to date EU standards and thereby lowering the tax bill on the car? I have an early 2005 D5 phase 2 Euro III engine (black engine block cover). I live in Sweden (but it's a UK car) and I am paying £250 extra per year compared to Euro 4 engines and about £500 extra per year compared to new diesels. Emissions standards are here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe...sion_standards I do also need to add a DPF unfortunately to pass emissions tests in Sweden. So in short, should I trade it in before the market drops out completely for old diesels or hang on in for a bright spark to save the world and our pockets? Thanks in advance! |

In a word, no.
The car needs type approval for its tax band, you can do whatever you like to it and it's tax band will stay the same unless you make it a complete custom, and re register it etc.

Thanks Owyn I suspected it wouldn't be that easy. Doesn't seem logical or fair.
Lower emissions should mean lower tax, no matter what the EU type approval. Emission test at MOT time clarifies emission. Tax paid accordingly. Folks are then incentivised to reduce their emissions and not buy new cars. Again, I am probably simplifying things to the point politicians probably wouldn't understand. |

It annoys me that I can no longer drive my own obnoxious particulate belching Euro 3 D5 into German cities and some other European cities but apparently a bolt on widget is available for about £150 which would allow me to enter but as Owyn says it makes no difference to the taxation. The £250 tax difference over a Euro 4 would be worth paying if you do high mileage due to the lower Euro 3 consumption and not having DPF etc to worry about. In my own case I will keep driving a Euro 3 as long as I can, they are much simpler and I think more reliable.

I'd have a word with VW if I were you, I believe that they have some special software that might help?

Engine D5:- Improve emissions/decrease tax bill any fixes?
I guess the only authoritative answers will have to come from members with experience of Swedish requirements - UK experience will obviously not translate into what is and isn't acceptable in Sweden.
Silly point perhaps, but can't the car be repatriated to the UK for whatever minimum period is necessary ( pay UK tax) - rent/ borrow a vehicle while it is there and then re-import it for the acceptable maximum period - and so on. Cheaper than paying Swedish rates? |

Sell it and (on the assumption LPG is cheaper in SWeden like it is here) buy a petrol converted to LPG with the relevant tax changes - i think they operate those in Sweden unless i've misunderstood what a native SWedish member on another forum has told me.

It is looking a bit grim for our Volvo V70 2003 lhd, if that is the road tax which is mentioned, no wonder Volvo's of this age are being sold off, even with high Km, will contact the BSR people concerning Ethanol.
