Wow, a guy in the service dept told you that, it must be true. I can assure you it more than 'just a screen'. As has been pointed out, it's custom made for Volvo, with custom inputs and custom software. Let see you replicate that for £2.5k

If it was 'only 800 quid' would you be any happier? Would you be thinking of paying for it yourself and not claiming on the insurance for it?

I guess you have 2 options:-

1. Hand the issue to your insurance co. pay the excess and accept the future premium rise.
2. Buy the one off ebay, find out if it is plug and play or needs coding and try and fit it yourself.

Car makers always make margin on spare parts, then the breakers and aftermarket get involved and prices drop. The older the car (within reason) the better this is for spares You can get one here for 450 so arguably the price you have to pay is only 450 quid. The volvo price of 2600 is irrelevant to you as the market now sets it at 450.....

Indeed you cannot replicate it for 2500 quid, however it still sticks in the throat a bit when the cost of manufacture will be probably 100 quid.... However as I said above the updated price is 450 quid for a replacement. I am sure it wont be too long before the aftermarket gets involved and new pattern screens are available for similar money....

What do you mean the ‘updated price’ is £450?

The price is £2500, unless you think getting one off eBay, taking it all out of the dash, potentially blowing something and voiding the warranty in the process?? Great idea!!

£450 for the used one sounds good to me. If that plan goes pear shaped then claim for a new one, fitted, on the insurance. That way the worse case is £450 plus an unlikely insurance claim with any applicable excess charge.

The description of the item on ebay is "12.3" GPS INFORMATION DISPLAY SCREEN MONITOR". Isn't that the dashboard display: "12.3" Active TFT Crystal Driver's Display" rather than the centre console "Sensus" touch screen display which is described as a "...9-inch centre display with touch screen..."

Though maybe it is mislabelled on ebay

Got to ask why you were using your iPad and where it was?

At £2500 insurance is probably the best route, if you had hit the deer and cracked the bumper and it was £2500 would you claim on insurance?
