Just wondered if one was tougher than the other after the comment about them being soft as sugar. And whether the wires in the heated screen help to prevents cracks or make the screen weaker.

I had a pattern windscreen on my 5 Series - no issues with the sensors or cameras on it.

It wasn't heated.

Just had mine done. Been cracked halfway across the screen since March.

Insured through Aviva on a small fleet policy.

I rang Aviva and told them that due to the sensors and the calibration that Autoglass were incapable.

They didnt argue and gave me a dedicated email address to send the invoice to.

My main dealer then did the job. 1085 quid inc VAT. Invoice scanned and emailed. Just waiting for the cheque now.

Wouldnt say it is any more delicate than any other car. My A6 had a screen in it's 2 year lease, my XC70 2 screens in 3 years. The CMax we had for 8 years as the low mileage runabout had a screen. My passat even had a side window explode at motorway speeds on the M18. Now that was surprising.....

What on Earth have you been doing, and where?
I've had 3 Volvos in 20 years, and only needed a stone chip repair once.

I had four on a Skoda Superb once - the original, a replacement due to crack, another replacement as the first replacement delaminated and then another replacement due to a stone chip!

It was a tongue in cheek comment really, but perhaps I've just been lucky.

I’ve a twenty year old Land Cruiser that is on its fifth windscreen. First had a chip that spread as a crack. Second was stoved in right in front of my face by a stone half the size of a football that was thrown up by the bumper of a large truck which misjudged the road 50m in front of me, coming the opposite way, and hit the stone wall with its bumper. It gouged a groove in the bonnet before hitting the screen. Third was when a big, and I do mean BIG bird flew out of a tree and left it’s rather tiny brain on the glass. This one stoved the screen in so far that it touched the steering wheel and was only a few inches from my nose. I swear it was the last live Terradactyl left on Earth. They are extinct now because I’ve never seen such a big bird since. Fourth was broken by the man from Autoglass as he tried to install it. It was on the car for three weeks while they sourced another one and some plastic trim. Which means that it’s on its fifth.

On my last car, when I spoke to the insurance company approved windscreen fitter he said I could only get a chinese no-brand windscreen, not one branded with the vehicle manufacturer's name. My V90 has lots of sensors stuck to the windscreen and I'm concerned that an off brand windscreen and fitting will stop these working properly.

Any suggestions on how to get the correct Volvo windscreen fitted?

The info given in the Volvo windscreen sheet is great, BUT when I needed a windscreen replacement I contacted my dealer who told me they would simply sub-contract the job to National Windscreens.

In the end I had it done by Autoglass who did use a Volvo original screen.
