New car!! 760 turbo diesel

Morning all.

So....I'm on the train heading towards Birmingham to pick up my latest motor.

An 89, 760 GLE turbo diesel Auto estate. I bid, and won, blind, so far paying deposit and collecting and paying balance today.
Bit anxious now as I've got a long journey ahead once I've checked it over.

Anything particular to these models I should check for other than the usual checks?

I saw this car at the Retro-rides gathering and on eBay - looks a good one to me.

D24T engines are interference engines, so make sure the cambelt has been changed or get it done. If it snaps, it takes out the head and camshaft - big bills.

I've got a 380mile trip to Forfar, to continue my weeks holiday, and then a 550mile journey to Brixham in Devon at the weekend with an overnight stop at St.Helens.

One way to give it a thorough test!!

Always like these Volvos, since I was a 12, in about '89. Pleased with colour and spec of this one. I had an Xc90 D5 until earlier this year and also convinced my dad to replace his bmw with a V60 R design a couple of months ago.

Just looked again at the eBay ad - as the head has been rebuilt, chances are its got a new cambelt too.

I've all the tools to look after D24t engines if you decide to keep this one longer than your sig suggests you might

I was going along with that assumption too with the cambelt but will check on arrival.

I'm pretty impulsive with my purchases usually but they tend to be cheaper and ALOT more local

Shouldn't be too much wrong with it but check the colour and level of the ATF - should be a nice "cherryade" colour if you drop some on a white tissue/bit of kitchen roll/McDonalds serviette.

Check the level with engine running and selector in N or P on level ground, take the dipstick out, wipe clean and then put it all the way in and remove to see the level. Two sets of markings, cold one side, hot the other.

If it's any colour other than cherryade like brown or black or smells burned, make an ATF change one of your first priorities.

Also check the prop centre bearing and gearbox output shaft bearing, both of these can wear and sometimes only show this by being noisy.

Not that many 740/760 diesels around now! I had to do a 250 mile round trip to get mine

I'd never noticed that on my diesel

Online there seem to be a few people suggesting the D24t engine needs synthetic oil, and several people recommend to run the oil level slightly higher (1cm or so) than the top mark on the dipstick - so I've been doing this for the last 20k miles and it doesn't burn or use any

Have another read of my post - i'm talking about the ATF not the engine oil!
