V40 1.9TD SE ( 2004 ) with "misfire"
Can anyone help please.
My V40 ( 133.6KMiles ) has been running great, but not now. Its service history is 1st 80K miles done by dealership, but therafter by local reputable garage. In recent days its developped what seems like a misfire. If it were a petrol i'd think it had a plug on the way out or an eht lead problem .. but its diesel !! Fuel economy I usually get is a shade over 50mpg. It starts perfectly well, runs OK when litttle or no power is demanded from the engine, but stutters when driving uphill, and daren't try to overtake. I've had it into the local guy today, who tells me that all the injectors are ok, there's no splits in any of the hoses / pipes, and the fuel filter is OK.. Fuel is always bought from same place, Sainsbury's .. so its not as if it's running on chip fat Ideas anyone ? Things that come to mind are fuel pump problem, sensor problem? .... but the local guy says I need to take it to Volvo to get it on their machine... any ideas what this might cost to get it on the diagnostic .. bit concerned as main dealer charges aren't what you'd call cheap. I only moved away from main dealer servicing because I simply couldn't afford to keep it going. |

I'm curious to know how your local guy is confident the injectors are ok? Did he remove each one to test it?
I'm still learning about this common rail technology but, from what I've read in the past, I'm lead to believe that these high pressure pumps are susceptible to any form of dirt particles. Is it possible that some micron of dirt is blocking a jet/passageway? There is a 'fly by wire' fuel pressure sensor on the pump but I would imagine if this was faulty then it would run very poorly. Rather than go to the dealer would it not be wiser to have a diesel specialist advise you on it? Quote:
Hope this is of help to you...

Thanks for the assistance, It seems that the problem is with the EGR position sensor, and Volvo told me its a "Volvo only" job.
I've been in touch with my local dealership ( Ray Chapman in Malton ) and for the princely sum of £300 plus a few coppers they can replace it. Any ideas is this is a sensible amount? I'm checking other dealerships a bit further afield, since the nearest competitor Volvo dealer is 50 miles away, and Chapman's are known for being a bit on the expensive side. |
