Fuel Pump Relay
My '89 240 GL is about to be passed on to my step-son and I am just trying to check it over before passing it over. At one time it had a problem with the fuel pump relay which would cut out intermitently. I overcame the problem by replacing the relay but I understand that it is the relay connections which cause this problem. As I want the car to be trouble free, as far as possible, I thought I would clean the connections. Can anyone instruct me in the correct bits I should be cleaning and whether I should use any particular cleaning techniques. Be advised that I am not the sharpest tool in the box so instructions should be thorough !!

I had a similar problem... turned out to be the fuel pump fuse... a common problem, as the fuse box gets old and dirty, the connections get hot and melt the 'bullet' fuses, which then shrink and don't fit properly anymore...
Easy fix is to just replace the fuse... however the problem will come back... you could try cleaning the connections and replaceing the fuse... or you could just replace the fuse box and new fuses... cost about £30 and took about 30 minutes... saying this... it might not be relevant to you problems anyway :-) Cheers Tony |

It's the contacts on the fuel pump relay itself that can cause trouble. Mine was intermittent in it's operation so I took the cover off the relay and re-soldered all the joints. It's been fine since.
