Is the Cat a MoT requirement on `97 cars, if yes would they check the unit or could I pull out the contents to make it a straight thru? Also how much do Volvo charge for a diagnostic, my lambda sond has lit up, though performance/ starting seems ok. I have a 940 Torslanda LPT. Ooops wrong forum!

Cat's weren't required 'till '93, but Volvo fitted them as standard for the Uk market from 1990.

Interestingly, when I took my 960 (late '94, new shape) for a MOT at one of those newfangled computerised testing stations I was told it no longer needed to pass the cat emissions test, just the ordinary test (5% CO and 3000ppm hydrocarbons as opposed to the 2% and 300ppm for the cat test).

When the test starts the cars' reg. no. is entered into the computer and VOSA tell the test centre what to test for. The tester told me that a lot of 'older' cars are now exempt from the cat test - could be useful to check out your own car to see if a cat is still required for the MOT!

That's interesting, because at my last MOT they only did a test under the old rules, not the full emmisions test they have always done in the past. I just kept quiet, thinking may be this was a mistake.

Also, not quite relevant, I have just read somewhere that vehicles with more than 6 seats are not officially "cars" and so only get tested at the older, easier emmision levels. Some garages insist on pulling out the two folding boot seats and checking the belts, others don't bother. So can it count as a 7-seater under this rule, if true?

1993 Torslanda
