Default 740 b230k survivor carb problems

Hello all, I’ve acquired an ‘89 740 GL estate, with a minimal 43k miles. seems to be totally original, well looked after, under neath is in amazing condition have been under sealed from nearly new it would appear.

After a few hours chasing air leaks & trying to fathom out the pierburg carb set up, it appears carb has been messed about with & unfortunately too many silly little things damaged putting it beyond economical/possible repair.

Drawing from people’s experience, what is the best option?

Webcon conversion, new oe carb if can be sourced or does anyone have a working used carb for sale?

I like the idea of originality on this old barge, had good experience with pierburg auto choke carbs on old vw’s to be honest, but is it worth the expense & trouble of chasing oe carb setup, or just take the webcon conversion as seems fairly popular?

Does it fit/work well & look fairly original in the engine bay?

Any input appreciated, would like to get it up and running properly and reliably.

Thanks

Damian

I’ve no experience of carburettor Volvos but like you have dealt with Pierburgs and Webers on Volkswagens. On these the original Pierburg is more sophisticated and better than a Weber, when it’s working properly.

My suggestion would be to overhaul the Pierburg. It’s unlikely to be worn out at only 43k miles. If you strip it down, clean and rebuild it to original specifications it will give you the best result.

On the other hand, if money is no object and you want originality go for one of these:

The original carbs have always been a pain. We used to convert them to CD175's from 240's as a cheap fix back in the day. The webcon conversion is a good setup and a lot more reliable than the Pierburg

Thanks for input. Original carb overhaul would’ve been my choice but unfortunately prior interference has damaged a number of components, hot start valve, auto choke electrical connection, has been apart & refitted with old damaged gaskets & debris inside chambers/jets, so no think it’s beyond repair, egr system has also been partially removed/missing parts & pulse air seems to be mainly intact. (New one on me at that age, like a 1989 emissions cheat device 😆&#129762

Shame I don’t think it’s worth trying to undo what’s been done, likely have to go the Weber conversion route & fully remove egr & maybe pulse air too. Do like the pierburgs when they’re right, but maybe this version is too complicated for its own good?
