Ouch - first service
Just booked car (2006 S60 D5) in for it's first service at main stealer - Stratstone Preston. £356 - yes you read that right. Obviously not just the taxman allowed to legally rob you !
Have ascertained that the oil is £70 of that so I will provide my own - would Magnatec do (£15 bottle from Makro) - will check but think is 5-30W ish. Will top up the washer bottle to save the £3-5 for the crappy little washer sachets they use. Does anyone know of any other way of reducing the amount they steal from me. How the heck can they justify that cost - surely all they do is change oil and flush, plug into computer and visually run round/underneath (denting and scratching in the process of course!). |

Book it out again. Then go to S40/V50 (2003 on) and read the thread currently in progress re servicing costs. Shop around.

If you plan on keeping the car for a while then why bother with main dealer if you don't want to pay that much. A Volvo specialist will be able to service the car to a comparable level and many have access to the software updates.
As stated, it is worth shopping around as not all dealers charge the same rates.

I called the 3 volvo dealers around me for a 60K service on a D5. Quotes ranged from £288 (inc fully synth) to £388.

Use the Volvo specialist at Warton. It is about 15 mile from Preston and about half the price. You will also get the attention of a top volvo mechanic rather than the 18 year old spotty apprentice that the stealers would use to do the servicing!

A recent change in the law states that as long as the garage uses genuine parts then the warranty remains. |

I also belive you don't have to use genuine parts.
The warranty will still be valid - it's up to the dealer to show that the parts used caused whatever failure you are claiming for on Warranty, if they can't then the warranty stands. At the end of the day the service is only a few tanks of fuel. The dealers - and some indy specialists do more than just a service. They will perform software updates/ replace parts as detailed by Volvo which are known to fail prematurely rather than wait for you to report it and claim under warranty. If you ask a dealer for a itemised list of all the work done on the vehicle you may be surprised. Vipes
