I think that Alpine units will work OK provided you use a special converter/adapter. I had a look at this some years ago and you should be able to get one for £150-170odd all in, It will then be controlled by your head unit itself. Search the web, I found a few in the UK that supply them.

Not sure where you are based but when I worked for Autoleads we imported an adaptor for the Alpine head units to utilise a standard Alpine changer (from any aftermarket source) instead of the Volvo OEM part as the radio is coded for the Volvo changer.
So, any Autoleads distributor should be able to help (except Halfords).
If it helps - if you can find a broken Volvo changer (eBay?) going cheap then the Volvo service-exchange unit for the 960 radio (double-DIN) is only about GBP130 as I changed one last year.

It's a good move to add this as you have to spend a lot more to get an afternarket head unit & changer of similar sound quality to the Alpine designed units, there are very good for OEM-fit in my opinion.

Best of luck.

Hi

Thanks for that. I have been told by some one that they are quite difficult to fit, and might be better off buying a newer cd player for the same price.

What do you think?

Cheers

My 960 already has the cable installed which powers the CD player and gives you control of the unit.
I found the end of the cable (CD connector) behind the rear seat nearside. Mutipin plug.

Thanks a lot for that.

I will pick up an alpine cd changer, and check to see if the cable is already there.

Cheers

The pre-installed Volvo cable will not do for the Alpine badged CHM-S600 series of changers. The Volvo unit requires a separate power supply which is not included in the pre-installed cable to the head unit. You will require to install an Alipne connection cable which does carry the power supply.

I have installed a number of the Alpine CHM-S600 units in my cars.
