Smile Changing fuel filter

Hi Guys
I have been trying to get to the bottom of my rough idle on the d5.
Today I have found out the fuel filter has never been changed since new in spite taking the car every year shelling out £250 plus each year for 6 years to a volvo approved garage and trusting them to do a good job for me.
So Sunday I am going to replace the fuel filter my self to ensure I know it is changed and I hope this will resolve the rough running.
Could any one just give me a run down of the procedure to follow and any problems I might face
Thanks
Rich

The fuel filter should be located between the two jacking points, drivers side of the bottom sill. Very easy to get at and looks like an oil filter. Drain the fuel from it by the bottom 10mm nut and simply twist it off by hand. More than likely tho it will be difficult to twist off... so I used a screwdriver to punch through it which gave a little more leverage. Messy but effective.

After fitting a new fuel filter the car will be hard to start as it must purge out the air pocket in the fuel line.. Give it time by turning over the engine in 10 second bursts with a rest in between or aid it along by filling your new filter with fresh clean derv before installing. Dont forget to make sure your battery is good with plenty of charge or you will be caught out.

if you have the paper type DO not put a screwdriver thro the filter casing you will damage IT.use a ratchet strap if its tight.

Just changed mine and despite previous owner having full service history the filter has never been renewed.

Done it myself and now know it is sorted.
