Try you local Volvo dealer as they are not that costly for swapping out this rather sorry part, poor design and certainly not up to the intended job!

Otherwise look at XeMoDeX for a true quality solution or bba remanufacturing to fix you own unit (circa £330) - Mike

Late last year it was under £200 from what I have read on this forum but I don't know the current charges they are making for this item, its certainly worth asking you local dealer for a price.

bba charged £330 this time last year when I had issues with the ETM, couldn't fault the service they offered and you get a two year warranty with the returned item - Mike

the ETM is prrogramed to the car it came off so a second hand one will not work.

If you get a secondhand one then the car will need programming from the main dealer, if you get a new replacement from the dealer then the reprogramming will be part of the job, if, like I did elect for the bba option you send away your faulty unit, it gets repaired and the original device is refitted to the car which requires no re-programming, the same applies to the XeMoDeX option AFAIK - Mike

either way you will have to take the car to a dealers, they will have to fit the secondhand ETM then you pay for software and fitting, they will hook it up for diagnostics then you pay. how long will the secondhand ETM last no idea. if it was me i would go for new then you have peace of mind , and i would have thought that fitting a second hand one would not be far off the price of new.
