Default Hu-850 audio cutting out at high volume

I have an 06 S60 with HU-850 head unit, the pro logic one with amp under drivers seat. The problem is that when I turn it up quite loud, the audio cuts out completely. The HU still functions, just no audio. If I turn the volume down, a few seconds later the audio returns.

I understand that the HU internal amp drives the centre speaker with the under seat amp driving the rest. When the audio cuts out, all the speakers including the centre one cut out. This suggests that the problem is with the head unit. However......

Last week I changed the head unit for an aftermarket one but I still have the same problem.

Anyone have any suggestions please?

Brendan, I am getting on a bit but I dont think so!

Dzega, it does it when driving, never tried without engine running. Shall I? What are your thoughts?

Does it cut out immediately or after a certain duration?

Is there crap under the seat preventing the amp from cooling?

if you're in dolby pro logic mode does the centre speaker keep working? Does it ever produce sound?

It will cut out on the first or second loud bass beat after ive turned up the volume to a high level.

Theres nothing under the seat (other than the amp).

With the oem head unit fitted, the centre speaker would also cut out so no sound at all. This is why i thought it might be a problem with the head unit. Ive replaced the HU with an aftermarket one (so ive lost the use of the centre speaker completely now) but the sound still cuts out if I turn it up above 20 (volume goes up to 30)
