Stereo/DVD: - CD Changer Replacement

Evening all,

I recently acquired an XC90 which needs a little tlc. I've already got to work but one part being a real pain at the moment is the stereo. The model I have has a built in 6 cd changer in the dash. I bought it with the dreaded "Disc Error". After trying to hold the eject button for a number of seconds as well as disconnect the battery (negative) for over 10 minutes I couldn't get it back to life so concluded the internals were shot to bits.

I then bought a second hand 6 cd changer off of eBay, although the part number was different it did come out of an XC90 and was 12v negative earth so I thought I'd give it a whirl.

Today I swapped the changer unit out. It recognised the new player, took a cd and started to play it. Then after a few seconds the display went black. I turned the stereo off then back on. The display lit up for a second then went black with no audio. I switched to radio, the display lit up and everything is fine.

I've done some homework and the best thing to do from here seems to be to swap the changer back to the original but transfer the internals from the working to the non-working unit.

Am I on the right trail of thought of have I jumped the gun a bit? Is there anything else I should try prior?

Morning all,

Just to let you know that I decided to go ahead and transplant the inner cd changer cassette from the working unit to my original no working one.

The process is fairly straight forward (if you've already got this far).

There are two screws securing the lid and two more at the front underneath where you would insert the cd. Pry the lid off carefully and they you'll find two more screws either side of the cassette. Lift this out gently and you'll need to disconnect the ribbon cable, the slack is reasonable.

Change the changer cassette with a working unit, put it all back together and install. Tested and working.

I guess the original unit must have something onboard that tells the car a secret code or something of the like.

By changing the innards it keeps this "secret" intact but repairs the bits all chewed up.

I could quiet clearly see that the old changer cassette was faulty as the cd's were not ordered and look as if they had been thrown all over the place.

I hope my post helps someone else sort out this problem.
