Regarding the DPF update - is there a easy way to check? It's got full service history, mostly with indie volvo specialists but can't see anything to say it's had software updates? It does have a sticker on the engine cover saying not to over fill the engine oil, is that a sign?

I had a 2008 S40 D5 some years ago and did a similar commute to work mostly on country roads and urban dual carriageways and never had any DPF issues. I always used Shell V Power diesel which I think helped to keep the engine cleaner. From memory the DPF software update was done by the main dealer around 2010 and they put a sticker under the bonnet about the oil level so I imagine it is likely the update was done on your car, I guess you could check with the Volvo dealer who serviced the car at that time?

Thanks Steve. That is somewhat reassuring. Does anyone know what the dpf update does? If it’s worth it I could ask my local Volvo dealer to check the updates on the vehicle and apply it if not.

The software update was to fix a problem with the DPF regeneration process as in some cases unburnt diesel was mixing with the oil in the sump and causing the oil level to rise above the maximum mark on the dipstick. Volvo dealt with this by a software update and by lowering the oil level. I seem to remember there was a recall on the D5 engines at the time.

Had a look through under the hood and think I can see the DPF, the slightly rust looking thing the photo below. This is behind the engine. Anyone able to confirm? Does look quite small.

The DPF in the D5s aren't a big issue unlike the PSA engines where fluid and replacement is required. Provided it's not just being used to go to the shops and back it should be ok.

Hi, a V50 with chassis number starting YV1MW76F what does this mean? It’s an E4 2010 1.6 Drive model with start/stop. I thought I was looking for a 4/5/6.

Cheers.
