Default D5 205 engine problems

I have a D5 205ps 2009 model xc70 manual.

Over the past few weeks the car has had a problem with what I thought was the DPF (poor running, stalling, fuel consumption increasing from usual 31mpg to 26mpg).

Dealer has had it in twice. 1st response was to reset fault codes (showed EGR faults). I was sceptical that this would fix it but took it back rom them.

2nd response was to clean or replace the filter and reset the fault codes.

Had it back 4 days and its playing up again. Main problem is severe driveline shunt on a constant throttle, so bad it makes my passengers feel sick. Engine is hunting, revs rise and fall by 500 or so at the usual 750rpm tickover so stalls frequently. Keeps going into what I think is limp home mode (although the engine management light isn't currently on) which means it won't rev or accelerate.

To make matters worse I know the dealers response will be as per last time, no courtesy cars available for 3 to 4 weeks, nothing they can do.

TBH the car is dangerous and I'm unhappy driving it (RAC recovered it last time)

Anyone got any suggestions?

This is becoming a bit of an obsession of mine, but was it subjected to the recent DPF recall & software upgrade?

And if so, did the onset of problems by any chance coincide with the software upgrade?

Volvo have aroused my suspicions by refusing to give any description of what exactly upgrade was meant to change, or to give me any specific assurance that it wouldn't have a downside.

It's just a thought, and there'll probably now be a flurry of responses suggesting that I'm misguided, which indeed I may be :-)

I haven't been made aware of any recall.

The problems started before the dealer got their hands on the car so I can't see it being what you are suggesting.

Thanks for the suggestion though.
