Question 2007 C30 2.0D - Blowing Sound from Engine??

Hi there,

Wondering if anyone could shed any light on this..

The other morning when I fired up my C30 I immediately noticed what sounded like a quietish blowing exhaust noise coming from the front of the car.

By the time I got to work (roughly 8 miles) the sound was definitely louder and was most noticeable at around 1000rpm just as I pulled away from a standstill.

I've had it into my local garage (not a Volvo dealer) for them to give it the once over and after removing all undertrays and such like they couldn't find anything obvious. They seem to think its more like induction noise rather than a blowing exhaust or manifold, though I'm not so sure.

Its not showing up any error codes or EML and it actually seems to drive okay with no loss of boost or lumpy power delivery etc.

Its just making this low, farty noise at low(ish) revs that is now quite loud.

I've checked the intercooler pipe and can't see anything, and all boost hoses seem to be intact and connected as they should be.

I realise it probably could be a number of things, but has anyone had any similar experiences of this or is it a common fault??

The car is quite high mileage and 12 years old so I fully expect that it could be something terminal...

Any pointers would be a great help.

I would suspect the exhaust downpipe flexi-pipe, they can often leak but 'look normal'.

Also check the induction side; the air filter housing lid and inlet pipe, the filter (is it really dirty) etc.

If the exhaust flexi is leaking you often get smells in the cabin when stationary.

Thanks for that.

I'll have a look at the flexi pipe on the exhaust and see what I can find. I would suspect it is that, though would you not think that it would be losing sufficient pressure to bring up an EML?

I took the air filter housing off the other weekend to check the condition of the air filter and its mint. I made sure that I re-fitted the filter housing correctly but will give it another check.

The inlet pipe looked okay too but I'll have another look.
