V50 Front Wheel Bearing Screaming
Hi Guys,
My V50, 59 plate has around 115k on it now. The other month the drivers' side front wheel bearing was replaced by a local garage. This new wheel bearing lasted me about 8km, so I have had it replaced again by the same garage (I assumed faulty parts). I watched the mechanic install it using a sledgehammer rather than the proper tool. The wheel bearing has gone again so i can only assume that he is damaging it during installation. I want to try and keep the costs down. I am confident I can do the job myself but need advice on the correct bearing to purchase - they range from £23 to £220?? Also, which tool would you advise to use? I have seen many on various sites - some pullers, and some a combination of puller and press, but many different sizes. All help will be welcome - even if you advise taking it to a different garage |

Skf wheel bearing/hub assembly.
Are you saying the 'mechanic' if he can be called a mechanic, has put two bearings in in the last couple of months? I'd be telling him to replace it, properly with a press not a sledgehammer, free of charge as he clearly has fubard the last two. Or make him pay someone else to do it if he isn't competent enough to do it properly. Front wheel bearing is a bit of a pain in the arse. In middle of changing my rear bearing but it's stuck solid in the hub carrier. I have a knackered wheel so might put the on the hub and smack the crap out of it with a sledgehammer, but there is no way I will be putting a new one back on like that! |

You either need a hydraulic press or a Gen2 Wheel bearing tool (78mm I think but dont quote me).
I used an SKF bearing from my front passenger side. Around £60. |

Cowboys.
Given cost of tool and bearing you could consider replacing hub complete.

Hi there,
As someone mentioned before, it is 78mm puller - something like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Neilsen-C...pid=1371527920 This is how to use it: https://youtu.be/CQxDj7jVidQ Good luck 😁 |
