Red Triangle of Doom - Fuel Additive Sensor
Morning all, I've had a search to try and answer myself and whilst there are a few similar sounding issues, none are concluded so I'm hoping you'll be able to help.
2010 V50 1.6 DrivE 130,000 miles. I bought the car in January 2017 with a 1 owner, 107,000 miles and full Volvo Service History (Volvo Bradford) so I hoped I'd bought a good 'un. I've had my independent garage service the car when the reminder light came on at 112,000 and 124,000 miles. I do a 20 mile round trip every day to School, and a 120 mile round trip to the office at least twice a week. It's not used for anything else. 3 weeks ago my alternator (well, the wiring loom) caught alight on the School Run. These were replaced and I picked the car up, drove it for a while but then, once warm, the engine would die when over 2k revs, so I nursed it back to the garage and a few codes flagged up but they cleared and the car drove fine in the couple of days between this and...... Was going to the office last Tuesday. A real bad eggy smell filled the cabin, which I thought was the lorry in front of me; I then filled the car up with diesel and drove 1/4 mile off the forecourt when the Red Triangle came on with "Engine Service Urgent" I drove straight back to my garage. The fault codes indicated the additive tank was empty, so this was filled with the EOLYS fluid. Except the light won't extinguish. The car drives fine, revs and accelerates without hiccup. The garage's code reads P2585 Additive Tank Sensor requesting warning light. That was as far as they could read into the system. So I found another garage with a VIDA Dice thingy, and this time it came back with that basically the Additive Tank Sensor isn't communicating with the computer. No other fault codes on the system (thankfully). We've unplugged and cleaned the electrical connector but still the light remains. a) Is renewing the additive tank sensor an easy job? b) Will this extinguish the Red Triangle (assuming no more fault codes crop up) or is it a main dealer job to turn off? c) Am I OK to drive in the meantime? (I'm very wary of electrical gremlins on Volvo's. Here's my old thread: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=135385 I fixed this problem but ended up getting rid of this one after all the dashboard died and was told it could only be fixed at a Main Dealer. I don't want to keep throwing money away chasing problems again....) |

AFAIK the sensor is in the tank so the tank may need replacing. Also worth checking that the DPF was replaced at 75k.
