I'm having the same problem on my 08 s40?
It's as if the electrical system is switching itself off, then re setting after a few minutes....

It's only started in the past week or so..........

Doors won't unlock, engine won't start...after a few minutes of being off , everything returns to normal....

Does this same thing happen with yours as well....

I don't know the answer, but when you say "it won't start" do you mean it turns-over but won't start or do you get no response from the key with a message up saying "try again" (I've had this a few times).

I'd suspect the ignition switch, like Welton says are their any messages on the dash, my switch went with a "key error" message "try again". Car was pretty much dead and couldn't be moved or started, AA man jiggled the steering wheel around for a few minutes and it eventually started. Replaced at the dealers FOC under warranty.

Oo-er, I've just had a quick snoop around on the web and apparently the steering lock mechanism can fail at 2-4 years old! the switch AND column gets replaced at huge expense (£800.00?) but Volvo were covering some out of warrenty jobs because it was such a common fault and the original parts were 'inferior'.

Mine has the keyless ignition.......I have found though, that if I take the house key off and the Tesco clubcard off as well it cures the problem.

I was speaking to someone purely by chance, they said that the Magnetic bit on the tills will interfere with the immobiliser on the key fob..hence shutting the car down when you go to start it!!!!!!!

Don't know how true this is..but it appears to be working so far....
