Default Aux Belt began stripping!

I have an 04' XC70 and this morning started the engine and a noticed a strange noise, popped the bonnet to find the aux belt stripping. The stripped cord (approx 100mm long) was thrashing around so i stop the engine. I clipped off the excess and all was fine....

I drove 2 miles and without warning the engine went into limp mode and the engine had developed a ticking sound, I stopped. Under the bonnet was a stripped aux cord about 200mm long.....

The cord had passed between the toothed side of the cambelt and caused it to slip the timing position. The car is currently at the dealership awaiting a prognosis of catastrophic failure or lucky bast*&D

ALWAYS REPLACE THE AUX BELT

You were lucky to find the 100mm piece first......but then you continued to drive it, dam bad idea.

Could have an issue with a pulley etc which is stripping the belt.

Hopefully your double lucky and it's going to be ok.

Default My aux belt just snapped this morning....

5 months ago I bought a 2011 D3 5 cylinder V70 with partial service history. I work on my own motors outdoors in the Highlands of Scotland. I did the rear pads and discs since buying it in the snow because I had too, but was deferring the aux belt (belts?) and transmission fluid until spring.

This morning I was de-icing the car when the belt that drives the alternator let go. I realised straight away what it was and reached in and shut down the engine. First job tomorrow is to take off the wheel and liner and see what is going on. The engine kept running so I am optimistic the timing belt is okay. I won't be turned over again until I'm sure there is no debris in there to affect the timing belt.

I would like to order parts tonight but am somewhat confused. Does it have one aux belt or two? Can anyone recommend a good online retailer for the belt(s) and tensioner as the place I usually use is out of stock.

Thought I'd put this here rather than starting a new thread. Plus it reinforces the messages above. Car on 72000 miles broken belt obviously life expired with cracks in the vees.

Car has two belts, the serpentine aux belt and a small streach belt that drives the air con compressor. That stretch belt is a one fit only, once removed it's binned and another fitted, and it has to be removed to fit the serpentine aux belt, so yes you need both.

As for alternative suppliers afraid I don't know, I went to Volvo.

Paul.

My aux belt snapped on my d5 at about 46,000 just before Christmas. Had charging failure service urgent warning on the dash. Thought it was the battery in all fairness till I hot home from work (luckily) and the steering went solid.

You really do not know how lucky you have been .. someone up there is looking after you ...

Don't be foolish and throw all that good luck away again and buy non genuine parts , make sure you get the Volvo parts ...
The belt should have been changed at 54000 miles I guess it was not . Also see your dealer , make sure all the belt/tensioner recalls have been done ..

Default Thanks for the replies.....

Stuck my head under the bonnet with the headtorch last night and spotted the second belt. So I need two belts one with a new tensioner. I've just been over to the traders section of the forum and had a surf but can't find an on line source for geniune Volvo parts. I Is there someone or do I need to pick up the phone?

Nearest Volvo dealer is over a hundred miles away so I would like the parts delivered, and quickly because cycling 10 miles each way to work at this time of the year is tough.

Apologies for taking the thread slightly off topic.

FRF in Swansea http://www.frfmotors.com/. There's a discount code to quote (possibly 'C3'?) which will get you money off. Most main dealers will offer 10 - 25% discount when mentioning the owners club but at least with FRF they seem happy to post stuff out.

Think of 6 random numbers between 1 and 49, and post them here please. I’ll use them for the lottery tonight
