Hi all,
Just agreed to buy a new car, and I'm left with my old Volvo.
Ran it through We Buy Any Car, who said it was worth £300. But then remembered this forum, so figured I'd give anyone here first refusal if they wanted it for any reason...! (hrm, don't reply yet, read on!)

However, be under no illusion, I reckon it needs a decent (£1k+) amount of money spent on it to get it up to scratch. I'll start with the faults:
  • Steering rack probably needs replacing - the steering is notchy and the power steering assistance 'pulses' when you try and hold it at certain angles (e.g. when going around a motorway junction sliproad)
  • Stitching on driver's seat is coming apart; some of the foam is visible
  • People in car parks don't respect other parked cars. There are a few scrapes and dings sadly. Old car; I've not seen fit to fix these
  • A clonk from the front suspension when you transition between accelerating and braking
  • A shimmy when braking hard from speed. Thought it was front discs; replaced these (and pads) to no avail... But the pads and discs are around 2 months old.
  • Alarm system battery has failed - so I've pulled the fuse. You get "Alarm system service required" message on start up
  • One key missing
  • Cyan printer ink stain on rear nearside passenger seat, just at 'belt' height on the backrest
  • Cruise control sometimes will disable and refuse to work again without cycling the ignition
  • Power steering reservoir leaks. But, I was refreshing this fluid anyway so I've taken the view that I'll just keep topping it up to keep it fresh; a rolling replacement policy if you will
  • Cambelt is around 90k old and 5 years old. Needs doing imminently, basically. Aux belt is the same age, so that wants replacing.
  • Aircon works, but isn't fridge like. Certainly that recent hot spell took it a minute or two to start making a dent on the searing heat in the car when it had been parked in the sun.. but on a long road trip it can keep up.
  • Front fog lights inop. Lenses there but bulb holder missing on one side.

The spec and vital facts which come to mind:
  • Volvo S60 D5 Euro 3 Geartronic
  • Registered March 2004
  • Grandad colour combination of Burgandy (listed as Red on all paperwork, that's lies, it's maroon at best), with beige leather seats.
  • Just shy of 160k on the clock
  • SE model with winter pack (so heated seats and wipers on the headlights)
  • HU-803 Dolby stereo with the 9 speaker option (not the upgraded PA-300 amplifer with additional speakers as in the R model)
  • Electric driver's seat with 3 memory positions
  • 160k miles on the clock
  • Geartronic automatic gearbox. I've changed the oil a few times so it's still shifting smoothly! I've got a half barrel (like, I think it's a 20 gallon barrel) of the specific fluid left over.
  • Has the newer dash (silver rings around the dials), so not likely to fail & need resoldering like the dash on the older models (which don't have the silver rings)
  • Has a Grom AUX-3 input fitted; gives you a 3.5mm aux input in the glovebox, and a USB socket that supplies power only. I've put an aptx bluetooth receiver in there too, so you can stream audio from a phone through the stereo. Exceptionally good audio quality!
  • I've got the haynes manual and roof bars. If wanted, the lucky (?) buyer can have those for free
  • I've also got that daft monster of a 36mm socket for the oil filter. Yours too, if you want it! You can use it to either service the car or to throw at something that you DEFINITELY want to smash, it's the size of a small fist!
  • Uniroyal Rainsport 3's on each corner. Pretty sure there's around 4mm of tread on each of them, but I haven't immediately checked them & am typing this at work with the car at home. So... presume that they're on the legal limit and be pleasently surprised about each mm over that that you get (oo-er).
  • Half a tank full of diesel! Gone are the days of buying a car and having a nervous drive to the petrol station, with the range-o-meter saying "yeah, 5 miles left, make them count!"
  • 17" alloys, think they're the Tethys ones (the ones with loads of spokes..). Pre-scuffed for your convenience.
  • MOT until November

I've had this car for 5 years and 100k miles. I've serviced it myself, but... given it cost me under £3k all those years ago, I've not been fastidious with keeping it clean and looked after. The steering is probably the most frustrating bit, think that alone will be circa £1k to put right and.. since it passed an MOT in that state I sort of ignored it, vowing to fix it "at some point".

I've got it insured for another week starting today, so if there's no interest after that that then I'll go to one of those 'We buy any car' services and get... well, whatever it's worth.

Basically, you should consider this car to be in need of a load of love, or (more likely) a donor for spare parts or for a project. While it can be driven away, the notchy steering's a bit annoying, so would suggest a trailer or a short drive to a garage for a new steering rack. An interesting parallel here would be a piano sold as "interesting sounding firewood", this is the car equivalent.

I'll get some photos up soon, but in the meantime if anyone's interested, let me know about any offers! I fully expect to be laughed at, so.. go for it.

Location is central Manchester, feel free to PM or reply in here. Of course, inspection welcomed & encouraged!

Ahhhh Lovely car(nice pics) with TETHYS alloys which suited the car so well .....

My first Volvo was a My03 S60 D5 SE and of all the variants of the S60 since that year shape is still my favourite.

Sold at 144.000 in Px for a My04 D5 V70 SE.

Loved them both.

Gone but not forgotten.
