Hi Matthew - just sent you an email. I should be able to put the package in the mail today - just send me your address/phone # via email. I have a small favour to ask though (as per email). A fellow forum member in Nottingham requires some windshield wiper nozzles. Would you mind if I put the package inside yours for you to drop into Royal Mail when it arrives?

Hi, I've got the same issue it appears. Can't get to the fuse to check if that's blown. How did you get to yours? I'm thinking it's probably going to be the motor. I'm assuming yours is a uk car. What is the best way of getting access to the motor. I've removed the glovebox but doesnt seem to give any access.

Ive attached a photo of the same kind of system. So it's got an auto button, or you can adjust the temperature by turning the knob for the temperature and fan speed

Cheaper option would be to change the resistor pack, but could do with finding a way of checking it to see if there are any faults. I haven't got access to vida, but I scanned it with a launch tool, quite an expensive one, and there were no faults on the climate control module. I did get an option of recalibration, but I don't know what the procedure is for doing that

Although a lot of owners call the heater fan speed control unit a resistor pack but actually it is a power transistor unit and it is the transistor which fails. It gets very hot and is bonded to the cooling fins which project into the air flow. It is possible to replace just the transistor if you have soldering skills. You would need to track down the same transistor type so that it can be bonded to the heat sink. I have done this on another make of car andf it worked but I also bought complete second hand units which seemed to work as well as new ones.

Exactly. There's no resistor pack, but an electronic drive unit, normally employing a power MOS-FET to drive the motor.
I've repaired the corresponding unit in a 745 SE I once had. There the fault was the opposite. The fan ran att full speed all the time, even with the engine off and the key out. Cars equipped with ECC all have this electronic drive module instead of the old style resistor pack. |

A bit of a technical question, I've gone through the various values reported by my Launch diagnostic tool, and it's reporting a fan voltage of 552V, which doesn't sound right at all. My fan blower doesn't work on any speed, the fuse is OK. Does this shed any light on what the problem may be.
If the fan motor was dead, I'd expect a 12v supply going to it. |
