Default Clunking/knocking sound

Hi all,

Can anybody advise me where to start to check steering diagnosing. The other day my wife came home and said can you have a listen to the knocking/clunking noise when the steering wheel is moved left/right whilst the vehicle is stationary, this happens when engine is off or on. When I rock the steering wheel left/right I can hear clunking/knocking noise. When driving no noise at all only whilst stationary. Also now and then there is a rubbing sound.

Many thanks

Alan & Nicola

Have you checked the level in the power steering fluid reservoir?

If you have any doubts about a diy approach, I can recommend PG Motors, a Volvo specialist on the edge of Townhill. My only link to the company is that they did my cambelt a few weeks ago at a very reasonable price and had to contend with several gotchas arising from the Volvo spares I had been sold. I was greatly impressed.

Could be the universal joint at the end of the column where it fits to the steering rack, there is a pinch bolt that should be tight, or even the wheel itself to the column shaft.

Many thanks
