Android Auto + Reverse Camera Upgrade options?
Hi all,
I have been lurking since I bought my 2012 XC90 last year. I have been seduced by Android Auto in a recent hire car and I want to know if I can retro fit something similar in my wagon. Car: 2012 XC90 R-Design with SatNav and High Performance Stereo Ideally i would like to get a Reversing camera (with guiding lines) as well as some sort of Android Auto interface, preferably to replace the comedy Sat Nav unit that Volvo jokingly fitted to the car. Does anyone know the best way of going about this is? Many thanks! |

Volvo have a standard reversing camera with guiding lines that are linked to the steering angle sensor.
I have this in my car otherwise, if you wish to throw away the existing nav unit but keep the screen, then you will need to 1. Use a programmable microcontroller eg Arduino to instruct the screen to raise and lower, and switch to the correct video input 2. Connect some external nav screen to either the RGB input (ideally) or the NTSC input 3. Connect some external reverse camera to the NTSC input (ideally) 4. Physically fit all the external nav and external rev cam components and power them accordingly. 5. Wire in the audio to the audio system AUX-IN input socket If you want guiding lines triggered by the steering angle, then you'll have to hunt to find one that takes CAN bus steering angle commands. To do all the above you will need electronics knowledge and programming skills.

+1 for the real Volvo reversing camera
I bought one on-line and had my local dealer fit it (still under selekt warranty at the time) I love it - really helpful - and I just wish I had a front version too Cheers Dave PS I don't think I know what Android Auto is... |

Thank you both for the detailed and informative replies.
Based on what you say SwissXC90 i can see this being substantially more work than it will merit particularly as it being our only car - i doubt i would have the fiddle time. I think i will look into mounting an Android Tablet and using the following: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gb.xxy.hr and also looking at a Reverse Camera kit upgrade to use the inbuilt screen |
