Turbo activator
2004 V70 Petrol
Now that I have the heat shield off the turbo, I noticed the activator rod was a bit cruddy, infact the whole turbo is a rusty casting. I got the car started and reved it up and down 3-5 times between 2000 and 5000rpm. During this time the turbo activator rod never moved a mm. Is this normal behaviour?? Cheers Bob |

probably as it needs a load to create boost not just blipping.
use a pump on the vacuum line that goes to the wastegate to apply the correct pressure required to move it

what I did was buy an inline 0-10psi gauge and stick my air compressor on very very low on the dial so its only trickling air in and use my air duster to get the pressure up.
Or you can buy a blood pressure cuff and cut it off

Wastegate activation
Thanks for that info Barry. Today I jerry-rigged a pressurising set-up to see at what pressure the wastegate began to open. Not particularly high tech, but I was approaching 6psi before the wastegate rod began to move. ( don't know how accurate the gauge is, but it does zero and is only 10 psi rated.)
6 psi I believe is too high, but I was unable adjust, as the lock nut or thimble won't move. My plan is to remove the activator ( two bolts on the "can end" and a "pin" on the thimble /locking nut end, clean and replace the rotten 10mm locking bolt. My current issue is now how to remove the pin as it appears to be piened over and any aggressive acts could snap the rod or even the wastegate control arm, and of course its has very limited access. Anyone got any suggestions?? Cheers Bob |

Wait til the engine is stone cold then lube it up with lots of penetrating fluid. What type is it? It it the one where the adjuster needs a spanner or the type that turns by thimble ?

Hi Barry
Think this pic will be worth a 1000 words. The pin appears to be peined over. Cheers Bob |

ah yes thats the later style one I have on my current car. mine was stuck too.
crp tonne of lubricate then grip it with some pliers to rock it anti, then clockwise. dont wrench it like crazy or youll wear off the grip on the thimble but enough to free it

BTW on the earlier t5 engine you could get away with setting it at the correct preload psi setting but my experience with the later types is to ignore that and use the official Volvo method.
this is for 2.4 T5 ... apply 10psi to wastegate, the rod should move an average of 7mm outwards from the inital position. Release the air, it should move approx 7mm back. Adjust the thimble until it is about 7mm travel. When i set mine to preload of 4.5 psi as recommended i had boost issues. so I followed that method as per volvo and it was ok
