Blue smoke
Colleagues hello Need some advice, what can it be: Vehicle: Volvo V70 Engine: D5 185 Bhp Year 2005 Issue: > Now that the temperatures are falling, once again, with my Volvo, I am facing this for me strange smoking effect. (Only happens on very rare short travels) > Outer air temperatures close to 0°C (+5°C - 0°C), I fire up my car, then after a short trip of lets say 5 – 6 Km, turn off the engine and what do I see, out of under the bonnet, right hand side from drivers view, upcoming blue smoke, smells like oil which has dropped on the exhaust system. There after I`ve taken a good look at the engine, hoping may be to see some kind of suspicious indications, unfortunately have had no luck so far > Visited my Volvo Dealer, unknown topic for them too. > The car has an extended warranty, I would like to avoid having a “huge shocking surprise” after the warranty has expired. Any in put is highly appreciated, many thanks in advance Paul |

Hi Paul,
Only a thought but is there a breather that could be causing prob? just wondered as there is more compression when cold and might be forcing more oil in and burning excess off, hence smoke??

I read somewhere that the smoking might be due to the engine preheating system, that is installed as a standard in some countries (but not UK, I think).
If I remember correctly, there is quite some information on this on German Volvo forums (Standheizung in German). Hope that helps a bit. Pim. |

As Pim said this is engine preheating system or webasto - night heater. Is located at O/S/F behind the bumper. When staring is blue smoking and stinking !!!

I agree could be a pre heater but if you have one installed then you need to switch it on using the timer/ remote , it shouldnt be switching itself on or leaking fuel when its not working so there is something wrong if its smoking but first check to see if you have one fitted so your not barking up the wrong tree . These types of heater are common in Nordic countries and nearly every truck in Europe is fitted with a similar Eberspacher heater and a lot of motorhomes , I tried tracing a fault on a Renault truck fitted with one , have not managed it yet because although the heater is simple in the way it works the electronics as always are designed to confuse the amateur mechanic . If your Volvo main dealer has any problem with the system take the car to a truck mechanic or motorhome specialist as they are normally working on these every day and know the faults inside out .

Just a wild suggestion to possibly further complicate things, but could the smell/smoke possibly be from rubber and not oil ? Maybe drive belt related ?

I think it is your pre heater
Hei.
I have a "nordic" V70 D5 2002 with this diesel pre heater/aditonal heater system, so called parking heater. This heater is placed ahead of the left front wheel, and it is recognized by a small aluminium eksaust pipe pointing to the right. It is not a webasto. It is fabricated by Ardic. This heater starts autimatically when the engine is cold and the temperature is below 5dgr. It helps / speed up the warm up of the engine and it stops atomatically when engine temp. is at normal running temp. (In very cold conditions the heater will switch on/off atomatically when engine is running, because the engine can not keep its normall tem by itself) If you fore some reason stop your engine before norm.running temp. you will see white/blue smoke comming from under the front of the car. This smoke will only last for a few sec. but you will hear the fan inside it running for nearly one minute after that. This preheater will need service/cleaning every 4th year. (Average) If not it will give trouble and give more smoke and noise. You can not turn it of, the only way to stop it is to remove fuse no.1 in the fusebox in the engine compartment. It is posible to upgrade the software. The preheater will then also be a programable parking heater. kindregs terje norway |

The first thing to check with a smoky diesel engine is the air filter. If this is dirty or clogged, then insufficient air is being sucked into the system to allow the diesel to burn properly - result = smoking engine.
Take the filter off – it won’t do any harm for a short period of time. Rev up the engine. If the engine still smokes, then it will be something other than the air filter. A pity, because the renewal of the air filter is normally the cheapest option! |
