Default D5 glow plugs

Hi,

When Volvo read my XC70 D5 with Dice, it gave a warning on the glow plug for cylinder 2. Is that counting from the left or the right when in front of the car - facing the car?

Furthemore, Is it recommended to change all glow plugs in the same time? Cold start in the morning could be better so i am thinking to replace them all in the same time. Are they easy to replace?

Thanks,

Hi I changed the glow plugs on my p2 v70 ,virtually the same engine as the P3.It was a very easy job .Allow between 30 min and an hour. Replace the whole set while your at it.

They are easy to replace but apply some wd40 or similar and leave to soak first.
You do not want one to snap in the head and they can snap like carrots!

You can resistance test the plugs as not all of them will be faulty. A genuine Volvo plug is getting on for 20 quid so that's a 100 pound just in glow plugs. I would test them all and just change the ones needed. No point getting a set of cheap ones as they won't last. YouTube how to test glow plugs and you can go from there.

Thanks. I ordered a set of 5 from Skandix and they are Bosch, so I suppose that those are good. Knowing that my Xc70 has over 200K KM I am planning to change them all at once.

When you change them make sure the engines piping hot, ie its been for a decent drive before changing them as they are less likely to snap,

Altho D5 glowplugs don't usually give issues its the 4 pot PSA lumps that make things interesting

I think one or more of my glow plugs is on the way out. Is it possible to check which glow plug is on the way out without using DICE? e.g. using a resistance meter?

My car is a 60 Plate, D5 (205) with 132,000 miles. It will occasionally have issues when doing a cold start. The car starts but there is a cloud of unburnt diesel accompanied by a brief period of rough idle. Once the car is warm there are no issues on this front.

I am hoping that this is a glow plug on the way out rather than a weepy injector.

Anyone else had similar issues on cold start up?

Test when cold and again when hot if not too risky/difficult.
A good glow plug will pass both tests, a bad one won't.

Just had the car in for a service at the local dealer, and they have said that i am getting a fault code from the TMAP sensor. No more information than that.

Would a fault in the TMAP sensor cause the cloud of smoke & surging on cold starting rather than a glow plug.

The glow plugs all seem to be ok in terms of resistance.

Just joined this group and having the same problem as Craig..lumpy on startup with white smoke..going to throw some redex at it first as the cheap option, then onto glowplugs..V60 R Design D5 btw

I changed my glowplugs at 270.000km, they were originals.
I sprayed some wd40 a little bit 2 or 3 times before to be sure they are free.
All went well, no difference at all.

They are used at cold start until the coolant reach 65°C to warm up the DPF, CAT and Engine.

They are also use during DPF regen when using the engine braking, to keep everything in temp.

If you have a faulty TMAP, the car can throw some different fault code :

P1407 (egr no flow detected)
P0106 (manifold absolute pressure map sensor (range problem)
P00BD (Mass air flow Circuit range)

MAP Sensor is clogging from the ashes caused by the egr/oil, you can change it easily (one screw).
If it's the one on the top of the intercooler, it's a bit annoying, but doable (I did it on a XC70 2006, it was super easy. It's a pain on a V70 2012.
