If you have an Android device, then I can recommend the very cheap Bluetooth ELM327 adaptors from the gearbest.com website. You will then need a suitable app for your Android device (I use the free Torque app). I have bought two of these, one for each car.
If you have an Apple device then you need a WiFi equipped adaptor and a suitable Apple app (such as DashCommand). But I have no experience of these.

I have a 65 plate V60 AT1517 30K miles, just out of warranty.
My problem began with Check engine light plus “Reduced Engine Performance”. Engine performance was normal. AS it was under warranty I took it to a dealer who said the Manifold temperature sensor was blocked. Returned car as fixed. NB cleaning this is not on the service schedule. 4 weeks later it happened again, I took the sensor out, it was covered in carbon. Where does that come from, the exhaust, the only route I know is via the EGR valve which must be opening when the engine is cold. Dealer had another go change some parts but not the EGR valve and changed the software. 6 months later (out of warranty now) Check engine light comes on. Plugged in diagnostics tester and get P04D900 – Closed loop EGR control at limit – flow too low. What I don’t know is this a new problem or the same as before masked by different software. Can anyone with a diagnostics tester confirm they have the same error code. |

It gets covered in the crud because a) there's always a few drops of residual oil in the inlet pipework & intercooler, it comes from the turbochargers' oil seals, and b) the exhaust gas for recycling via the EGR is tapped from the exhaust manifold before the DPF, so it's quite sooty. The combination makes the horrible black gunk you see on the sensor. On my 2014 D4 I used to remove the sensor every 6 months, spray it with carb cleaner and carefully remove the crud with a soft plastic interdental brush. |

There is also an unconnected issue of an oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold becoming sooted-up and giving a slow response... This results in an engine warning light and a stored P014c error code. Mine seems to have cured itself, presumably during a DPF regen?

Was doing my due research before helping sister find a D4 XC60. Then found this thread! Uh-Oh!
Should we re-consider? She has a 20k budget and the low road tax of £30 on the 181PS motor looked attractive. She only needs FWD, manual gearbox. Looking at 2016ish cars? Any summary advice would be appreciated on belt service intervals, recalls on EGR etc. |

I'm sure the road tax is more than £30 ?
Make sure the service history is up to date and EGR fixes have been done. Iain

Any particular way of checking what EGR fixes SHOULD have been done, and whether they HAVE been done? |
