Thank you blueosprey90, appreciate advice from all sides of the pond !
I’m a stickler for the manual so I keep going back to Sae 10w30 being the specified viscosity.
Frustrating that UK seem in short supply of that viscosity, though.

I feel AndyV7o is also quite right with his 10w40 suggestions, too.

Some modern oils that would be ok in terms of basic fundamentality, providing there are no known issues with your engine and detergents, and that its very clean internally

This may well be the ticket... https://www.classic-oils.net/MobileD...p?Prod_ID=4478

Thanks agin for the advice and spot-on suggestion.
So I’m pretty close to having my mind made up, just checking som further points re 10w30 oil being available or not...

No problem!
As I listed, there is 10w30 available from classicoils (though Id personally prefer the fuchs 10w40)

One of my big surprises was to see that motor oil runs just like water when hot. Not the molasses it is when poured in at freezing temps.

Reading up on these now.
It looks like SAE 10w40 might be just fine.
Feedback with what I find / any further questions shortly.
Thanks again, really appreciate the help.
Cheers

I use Castrol GTX 20w50 from Opie oils on my Amazon. Good service from them and very reasonable priced. That is what Volvo recommended from the beginning. Keep in mind also the retired New York schoolteacher who bought a P1800 in 1966 and it is still running with 3 Million miles using only Castrol GTX!! I think your car will be safe!

Indeed!
This is where a lot of people get their heads wrapped up n tied in knots! 'Oh, 0w40 is waaaaaay too thin to replace 15w40, it'll reet F##k your engine' that kinda thing. Nope! The hot 40 viscosity is waaaay thinner than cold 0w. When the engine is up to full temp, the latter number is the key player, so, all are largely thr same when hot. But when cold, the 0w is much closer to hot 40 than 15w is, and will get where it is needed much, much faster.

Wow, there’s so many threads on multiple forums about oil. These 60’s engines require a reasonable level of zinc and phosphorus, somewhere around 1200 to 1300 ppm. Modern oils don’t have levels that high due to catalytic fouling. Do your research and the answer will be apparent. 10w30 vs 10w40 vs 20w50 depends on ambient temps. I.e. summer 20w50, winter 10 or 5 w 40 or 30. Depends on how cold it gets.

p.s. indiscriminate use of ZDDP additive can result in levels too high which will result in accelerated wear of cams.

I wouldn't stress about it. Given the amount of miles the average amazon does these days whatever oil you choose will see the engine outlive humanity.

As already mentioned 10w-30 just isnt popular in the uk, we used 10w-40 instead and in an engine like the B20 10w-40 can be used in place of 10w-30, the engine and driver will not notice any difference and 10w-40 will give you a lot more choice.

Unless the engine is tired or using a lot of oil I would not bother with 20w-50 especially with winter coming on.

The Fuchs Classic 10w-40 will make a great choice.

Cheers,

Guy

Thanks Guy, much appreciate the advice re 20w50 vs 10w40 this time of year. That's why I was (am) keen on a 10w30 per the manual.
However, totally understand the minimal variance between 10w30 vs 10w40.
Fuchs Classic 10w40 looks and reads pretty good.
Thanks again
