Default Squeaky rear suspension V70 2008

Have recently changed my P2 D5 182000 miles for a 103000 mile P3 D5 SE lux 2008 model. Great car very smooth and quiet until a couple of days ago. A loud squeaking coming from the boot area . First I re-moved any thing in the boot that could cause any rattle or squeak .Checked all the usual suspects like the tailgate lock , seat mounts etc . I then drove with some one in the back and located the noise, its coming from the rear near side suspension with an occasional loud clank when a series of bumps rocks the it .The shock absorber seems fine and mounts all appear good. I could replicate the noise with gentle rocking the car so I put the car up on stands and cant find any obvious signs of worn bushes etc on suspension or the anti roll bar, using a pry bar ,so put car down and test drive and noise had stopped only to return a couple of days later . It also stops for a short while after a sharp left turn . Any ideas as its driving me mad.

Assuming when you emptied the boot, you also checked the spare wheel well?

Other than that, I would double-check the shock mounts, I recently had something similar, it was only when I took one shock off to inspect it properly, and then re-assembled that the noise went away - it sasthe top shock mount after all (not on my Volvo tho).

Thanks for the reply MartinK. I think I may have found it . Its the rear suspension drag link front mounting bush. Once the cover was removed the the arm could be moved side to side on the bush as the rubber had come away from the mounting . Will sort soon and get back.

I had this problem and it took ages for volvo to find what the problem was as it only did it when it was dry but thank god they found it, it sounded like a bag of old bolts

Hi .Did volvo say what the problem was ? or just say they fixed it. I'm waiting for my car to go in on Wed to a local garage . I would normally strip it out and fix myself but having just bought he car am letting the dealer sort it as it not covered by the supplied warranty !

we have a mechanic over the road who had a look at it and we only found the problem by me sitting on the boot with the door open. Mine got that bad i could press down on the tail end and it would squeak effortlessly. I then took it down to volvo who had a tech come out and have a look, I pressed down like before as he had his head under the rear wheel arch and said "yep thats your bush"

I believe the issue you relate to is a known issue, see the following Technical Service Bulletin:

NHTSA Item Number: 10047942
Service Bulletin #: TJ-25336
Replacement #:
Vehicle/Equipment Make: VOLVO
Vehicle/Eqipment Model: V70
Model Year: 2010
Mfg Component Code: 022000 SUSPENSION:REAR
Date of Bulletin: 2012-11-28
Date Added: 2012-12-10
Summary: VOLVO: UNSTABLE REAR SUSPENSION, PULL OR DRIFT DUE TO INCORRECT WHEEL ALIGNMENT OR REAR WHEEL CAMBER ANGLE OR ON UNEVEN ROAD WOULD HAVE CLUNKING OR KNOCKING NOISE FROM REAR SUSPENSION DUE FRONT BUSHING, IN REAR LONGITUDINAL STAY, FAILED.

I posted on this issue earlier this year as follows:

#1 Well they had a look at the trailing arm bushes as per the service bulletin and confirmed they needed replacing. Apparently they used to replace the whole arm with the bush but now they have a solution to replace just the bush. It's in the garage today to have the work done so fingers crossed it might be a cure. Nonetheless I'm surprised that the bushes are failing at only 56k miles, 2.5 years old and very rarely fully loaded.

#2 It seems the delamination occurs between the bush and the circular steel pressing which surrounds it as a result of corrosion in the steel. The replacement bush is now treated with some sort of rust protection to prevent it happening again. I imagine this will be a more common problem as these cars age. I'd suggest if your car is nearing the end of its warranty period you ask your local dealer to check the bushes next time you're in for a service.

Additional comments:
1. My understanding from the Volvo main dealer was that a press was needed to insert the new bush in the existing trailing arm.
2. What I have called a "trailing arm" is probably what Volvo refer to as a "longitudinal stay".
3. The "longitudinal stay" seems pretty flimsy!

Hope this all helps one way or another.

Thanks tommyweaves. You describe exactly the same problem noise etc I'm having with my V70 .It due to go in on Wed for repair. Looks like a sign of cost cutting to me as the suspension parts look very flimsy compared to the P2 model .

I know what you mean, one hardly dare place a jack under the car anywhere in case something bends!

Is the work on Wednesday being done by a Volvo Dealer/Specialist or just a local garage?
