There won’t be play in it! They seize solid and cause the belt to chirp/vibrate/squeal. There is a good video from Volvo Sweden on YouTube who shows you replacement. Worth a look.

Today its 14 degrees, so the chirping isn’t as bad because it’s relatively mild. I do find its worse when its damp outside or colder.

I recorded a video on my phone. I can hear the squeak faintly, but like I said, its not bad today. Those with a keen ear may hear it, but the engine noise doesn’t help!

How do I post the video here?

I’ll check volvosweden’s video out.

I watched VolvoSweden’s video. It looks like you need a special tool to remove the alternator pulley and he removed the alternator from the car… it seemed like a right faff to do that.

Could the alternator pulley be replaced in situ, i.e by not removing the alternator?

If I want to test the alternator pulley, can this be done with the belt on?

You do need a tool yes but they are not exspensive. You can test the pulley in situ but you need to remove the belt.

I did not remove the alternator from the car, there is no need. I removed the drivers side wheel, peeled back the liner to access the tensioner. Removed the belt. Removed battery negative, unplugged alternator and removed power cable. Unbolted alternator and twisted it on its side. Then used an impact gun to remove the pulley with said tool. Then fitted the new pulley and tightened it on with the impact gun gently before finally torquing it. Then re assembled. Took about 45 mins. This was inside in a workshop but not on a ramp so I wasn’t battling weather etc and also had all the tools to hand. If you have done the belt and tensioner you’re more than capable of doing the pulley. Also gives you chance to inspect everything else.

My mechanic replaced the pulley without removing the alternator (V70 D3 2013 D5204T7).

Thank you for your replies.

I need to find the correct tool to remove the pulley. Does anyone have a link to a site that has the tool? I may have found one below, but I’m not sure if it’s correct.

Would this be the correct pulley?

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/spares-sea...ier%5B%5D=1313

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/force/13659477 (removal tool?)

I just searched for an INA pulley based on VolvoSweden’s recommendation in his video.

That is the link for an INA branded pulley. It’s the same part no as what I fitted and that of volvoswedens video and is what I used on my S80. The tool you linked is also correct and has same part no as volvoswedens video.

Hi,

No. Its barely audible now the weather has warmed up. It does it more when its really cold outside or if its been damp overnight.

I have a video, but I don't know how to post it here. Can anyone help with that?
