Sorry forgot to mention in my rather long winded previous post that when the brake pedal is pressed, the voltage meter takes a sharp dive in to the red 'Low' section. (Standard Volvo Voltage meter fitted.)

How very strange! Sounds like something is draining the battery big-time when you hit the brakes. Do you have a tow-bar kit? My car does, and it could possibly make it easier for a short to occur. Are the brake lights actually working? What size is the fuse that they are on? It sounds obvious, but the symptoms there are of a huge current draw (and therefore volt drop) on the brake light circuit - and this is most likely caused by a short.

cheers

James

You may have a high resistance cell in your battery. Is the battery fully charged ? ie use a trickle charger overnight. Can you check the electrolyte in your battery or is it sealed type?
Try to borrow another battery to eliminate it as the problem.
