Default 2004 V40,Whats it worth?

My wife is getting a new car and I can have her old one,so its time to say good bye to my V40,the only thing is I dont know how much its worth. Its a 2004 1.8 Sport,Black with leather interior. Its got 140,000 miles on it and only about a months MOT.The cars in fairly good condition. It has climate control, zenon headlights and heated seats. Some service history although I have done most of the work on it for the three and a half years that I have owned it.Recent oil and filter change, new spark plus and alternator belt. There is probably more that I have forgotten.Roughly how much should I ask for it please?

43 people have looked at your post but dare not tell you the truth, so here goes, three parts of b*gger all. Sorry to be harsh, but none of our cars are worth anything, apart from to ourselves as we know how good they are.

The secondhand car market is awash with such cars and it is a buyers market and folks can pick and choose at will - add on the fact that our cars are unfashionable - and no one is going to win any bragging rights when it is parked outside their house.

The best thing to do is look at recent completed listings on ebay and see what similar cars are selling for, that is your best indicator. If similar cars are going for say £300 - 400, start your listing at say £200 -225 and see where it goes. Before trying to sell, get a new MOT on it or else you are looking at scrap value.

Can't comment on the V40 specifically, but would endorse 'ITSv40's' comments regarding the MOT. As a rule of thumb, any half-decent car with a year's ticket is worth £4 - £500. With a very short MOT like yours many would not even consider it. If you have confidence in the car, the cost of the MOT would be a very sensible investment in the sale indeed.

Regards, John.

Have to agree with everything above - sadly our cars never have the financial worth we'd like them to have: their value is rather as a running car for our own use and pleasure.

I would also strongly encourage getting the MOT - people often buy cars worth a few hundred on the basis that they get a year's worth of motoring out of them and perhaps then just start again, but if you're not even looking at a year then it isn't worth it.

Good luck!

David

On the bright side, as you're in Nottingham you should be near a branch of weonlymot who are completely independent, don't undertake any repair work and so don't have any conflict of interest to encourage them to invent faults...
