Default XC70 2002 grinding/sliding on full lock

Hello,

I recently picked up a bit of a project car , with some minor issues that I hope to work through.

I have not had much time to drive/look at this car yet, only driven it home and around locally to try and get a feel for the problem.

firstly, it seems to pull quite noticeably to the right, when braking, I have (only visually) inspected the pads and discs, they all appear quite good, the car has extensive service history.(albeit almost every single service from a standard garage, none volvo, or volvo specialist) i can see a lot of meat on all the pads. although I have not (yet) had the wheels off and inspected the calipers.

secondly, on full right lock, at slow speeds it really grinds, not a metal grinding sound, but it FEELS like the front wheel is being pushed forward, rather than wanting to turn, I cannot confirm yet, but it's a difficult sensation to explain, it almost always does this when on full lock to the right, and SOMETIMES but not always does this when turning left. inspecting both inner arch liners I can not see any wear/damage, as i initially theorized about perhaps wheel turning in too far.

overall the steering and suspension feels a little strange, possibly just because i am not used to this car, or maybe something else. inspecting the tyres, the offside EDGE of the NEARSIDE front wheel is very worn, and the NEARSIDE edge of the NEARSIDE rear tyre is also worn, overall it will need new tyres are they're all very low.

I will take another good look tomorrow in the light (as it's getting a bit too dark here now) and report back with findings.

however advise is appreciated

-Matt

so, to add some more information to this; when turning a sharp right, the wheel goes so far, then it pulls the wheel further right, and that's where it does the weird scraping

I was even thinking that perhaps the tracking is way out of alignment, maybe even the front struts are mis-aligned?

I suspect the problem is with the strut top mount bearings.

so today i had a look , it seems both lower control arm bushings are completely shot, so first job is to replace them, and i guess inspect the lower ball joint while im at it.

so, a new interesting problem!

I installed new control arms, and now the toe in/out is WAY off, i didnt even put the wheels back on, when the steering wheel is centered, i see a LOT of toe in on both sides.

I have ordered new tie rod ends since i found a bit of play in them, and i planned to get tracking done after installing all these parts, but i really didnt expect the tracking/alignment to be SO far out.

Im not experienced, so, maybe someone can enlighten me, have i made a big mistake when putting it all back together? it was a struggle getting everything to line up when putting the knuckle back into place, but i felt like i got it all back together correctly.

could something have been way out of alignment before starting all this (that had been compensated with before and contributing to my scraping on full right lock? that is now half straightened out, meaning the tracking is WAY off?

Not an expert at all me, but I have seen on here and other forums that they are designed to touch the inner arches on full lock, yes designed that way, so much so Volvo had to let authorities know to inform mot examiners. This is not your current issue, but it may still touch when completely sorted, so be aware.

check that you have the correct control arms for an xc they are different on the v70 but look very similar but if you have the wrong ones it will be impossible to set the tracking

you're indeed correct. here's a comparison between a V70 and XC70. the part was advertised as fitting an XC70 caused me a lot of wasted time and headaches, have ordered the correct part now, hopefully can finally get this thing done!

some pictures for reference
