Maybe a question worth asking...

If your car does not have an MOT and you are involved in an accident, will your car insurance cover you?

Morning , very simple rule IF your MOT expires before 30/3/2020 and you do not have an MOT test carried out or it fails the test , your car is not road worthy or legal to be on the road . Therefore your insurance will not cover you

However if your MOT expire on or after 30/3/2020 , DVSA will automatically extend your existing expiration date by 6 months , there is nothing for you to do in that regard other than check online that the addition time has been allocated.

You must ensure however if you have the extension you MUST ensure your vehicle is roadworthy at all times . I would strongly recommend getting a test done as soon as possible as there may well be a surge in demand for tests .

I am an MOT tester & struggling to deal with phone calls / tests & DVSA / .GOV.UK updates , definately not looking forward to the aftermath

The extension will only show a couple of days before thr first 12 months is due to expire, so don't lose any sleep checking the DVLA website every 5 miinutes wondering where it is.

DVSA are altering expiry dates in chronological order , so those due this week are being amended & as they gather speed others with later expiry dates will alter .

Please Google & read the .Gov info out there ,I have posted much myself that I receive as an MOT tester .

https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/ can help . Your amended expiry date will possibly not happen for weeks or longer

On the DVLA website. They state that the extension will be applied either on the day of expiry, or up to several days beforehand.
