Default Parts availablity/compatibility for '07 3.2?

My xc90 developed a scraping/grinding noise in the front driver's axel. My (local Volvo indi) said the driveshaft needed to be replaced. They have sourced 2 different OEM ones and neither have fit - too short apparently. The part numbers match but they think it might be that the generic part is for the diesel and the 3.2 is different. Is this possible? The part from Volvo is 4 times the price so hoping to sort as OEM. Any thoughts welcome!

The Volvo one might be x4 the price but it will fit...

If you share your VIN number, someone with VIDA may be able to get you the part number.

The 3.2 uses the same gearbox as the D5 but I guess it may be positioned slightly differently in the car, necessitating different shafts (perhaps).

I'd also add your local Indie does not appear to be competent, these are not usually difficult cars to get parts for, if you match on part number and it is an original (Volvo) part - it will fit.

Bit harsh on the indie. My 2.5t needed a new power steering pump and there are four options. Between the dealer, parts supplier and indie we had three on the bench before getting the right one. Not always easy.

Clearly I don't know for certain but I would expect the "right one" came from the dealer?

MY2006/7 is the first year of the 3.2 and when they did the 'facelift' so you need to be really careful when ordering parts. I have had to have many arguments with parts suppliers and ebay sellers because their info shows that my car is pre-facelift when it's actually post-facelift. Lots of weirdness. Best thing is to get access to VIDA and put your VIN number in there to get the correct part number, etc. But even then, if you're buying aftermarket parts, you need to be careful; some websites/sellers will say that their part fits the car, and is a match for VIN, when in reality it's not. Doesn't help that the 3.2 wasn't the most common engine in the UK, so even a lot of Volvo specialists don't have much experience. I've found the US sites helpful because they were more popular there, but then you have to watch out for differences between LHD and RHD.
Still, I love my 3.2 -- it's on 260,000 miles now (150k of which were on LPG) and the engine and gearbox have never been apart. Still runs great.

The saga continues. Another OEM sourced that didn't fit. I found the original part number on the current drive shaft (P30783108) but googling it they seem very rare. Nothing OEM new seems to match or look right. Some used ones for sale in Italy and one in the US (both about £300). The genuine Volvo part is £1,000 which is bonkers.
