Thanks for the info.

Re that hose that goes nowhere (first pic), I checked around the airbox for somewhere for the hose to go, and there doesn't appear to be anywhere. On the opposite side of the airbox from the hose there is a place where a hose could go, but it is nothing like the diameter of the hose (the thing on the airbox is about an inch in diameter), and it is covered with a rubber thing which looks like it is meant to be there. However I know the airbox is the wrong one for the car because the mounting points don't even come close to lining up with the appropriate mounting points in the car.

On the fuel pressure regulator, there are two hoses. One clearly visible in the pic, and one coming out the other side. Which one do I pull off? There will be no pressure in there will there? I.e. I won't get sprayed with petrol if I pull it off?

Pull the one on the front that loops down and connects to the inlet manifold.
Inside is a diaphragm that is controlled by the vacuum from the inlet manifold.
You shouldn't smell any petrol from the nipple. If you do, it needs changing.

If you haven't changed the hose, it will probably need changing.
I have changed practically every narrow hose in the engine bay so far.
I think I'm getting Volvo OCD

Sorry, I'm being a bit thick, all this engine stuff is new to me. I've doctored the pic slightly. Do you mean to pull off the hose marked A, or the one marked B in the new pic?

Also, notice the dark patch on the hose (circled) I never spotted that when I was out there, just noticed it in the pic. I'll check that out tomorrow, as dark patches usually mean leaks to me.

A.
If the hose isn't perfect, replace it.

Thanks. I'll have another look tomorrow. I presume its just plain old hose that I can get from any decent motor factors?

Hi,

That hose (A) does look to perish looking at the same pipe on my 940.

You could get adventurous and replace that regulator with one of these:

What's the gadget? Where do you get them? Is there much point in having a dial on it when it lives under the bonnet?

Picture is a link!
Dial allows you to adjust the pressure (while the bonnet is open of course!).
Helps to maintain a higher level of pressure in the fuel rail to aid increased performance - reputedly..
