Default welded diff, yay or nay?

So, anybody ever ran a welded or locked diff on a 740? I'd like your thoughts please.

depends if you use the car every day really, ive heard from alot of people with different cars it will wear the tyres out alot quicker

maybe try swapping in a 940 turbo axel with LSD ?

Would you be able to get a quicker launch, but just more brutal for turning quickly? What are the pros and cons? I was also wondering about this. I currently have a locking diff on a late 97. Read somewhere is locks until roughly 25mph?

A locking diff only locks up when there's a ~100rpm difference between the rear wheels, i.e. only one is spinning. It won't lock above 20 (preventing the unskilled driver from spinning off the road if one wheel suddenly loses traction at high speed). Once it's locked up below 20 though, if you keep your foot down it should stay locked regardless of speed until you let off the throttle.

I've never driven a car with a welded diff, but from a friend who owned one, they aren't very nice if you plan on driving it regularly, it's fine if you're looking to build a drift-mobile but otherwise you'll have accelerated rear tire wear, reduced rear grip, and the car skips and hops something chronic in low speed cornering.

get a g80 locker standard 940 turbo axle then reduce the size of the governor and then that will give what you want.when i do drag racing in my 940 before i did the governor i used to launch and the car would grip and then let go pushing the car sideways but since i have done the governor now the car is in a straight line at any speed and i can lauch like a mad man and burn both tyres no probs in a straight lane.also took the car round silverstone last year with no probs at all.hope this all helps and yes it was my daily driver at the time but now i use it for summer use only.thats why im fitting inlet manifold like my last thread.

Thanks for all your replies and thoughts, keep them coming.

So when replacing the governor, how much adjustment would I have to play with? Ie could I for example press a button and keep it locked until I want to unlock it? Or is it always just governed by speed/rpm?

cheers Neoott

you dont replace the governor you just shave the governor down and then the diff stops locked for longer mate.the is a writeup on turbobricks someone might be able to put a link up for you.

I've run welders on the road and track lots with no ill effects. Yes you need to get used to them, and yes you will wear out bushes and tyres more quickly, but the level of grip is actually increased before the limit is reached, and the level of control is increased beyond it.
