Any comments made are in no way ment as a dig at Chris or previous work undertaken. As stated in my profile I am an old style time served mechanic so this engine is right up my street.

Heater was not bypassed but the control valve was, and connected direct . I assume at some point in it's life it was indeed bypassed allowing the matrix to dry up fester and clog. Despite all the tricks of the trade from back flushing, kettle de scale left in the isolated matrix overnight still no joy looks like the dash is coming out and a new unit needs to be fitted.

The agricultural clatter and noise of the engine mentioned in a previous post is not due to it's designe or nature. I don't remember having to work on a VW LT with the engine running and having the wear ear defenders nor do I remember pedestrians looking over their shoulder thinking "what the hell" as you drive down the road.

A stuck cold start wax stat on full advance and a very badly dripping injector on no 5 cylinder are the culprits there. A full set of nozzles from Diesel top shop are on the way.

Also developed an intermittent starter solenoid fault no problem that's on order too. The hissing from under the bonnet under hard throttle I don't think is induction due to the large K&N type cone air filter . I suspect a pressure leak from the turbo possible inlet manifold or split intercooler but will no more as soon as I get hold of my mates pressure smoke machine.

Now the good bits. The auto box and transmission are as good as I have ever driven very responsive and tight gear changes up and down if a little low geared until hitting overdrive at 60.

The performance, pull, and torque has a grin factor of 10 out of 10 er indoors has christened Sooty " The Millennium Falcon" that's before I get my hands on the turbo.
The EGR blanking plate on the exhaust manifold will make a great mounting for the EGT sender when all is sweet.

Not had chance to get Sooty up on a ramp yet but I suspect suspension bushes need a sort out before the MOT in January. Strange shuffling front the front end on full lock in revers almost like a transmission wound up 4X4.

Chris has spent a lot of time and hard earned cash making Sooty a worthy subject for further investment as my new bio deep fat flyer.

Will post more with picks as Sooty goes through stage two.

Sounds like you are going to be busy !

I don't know the exact car you have bought but some heater matrix can be removed without taking the dash out by removing the clutch (if it has one) and brake pedal. I have done this on my 94 940 without air con.
I also removed the dash the first time so I know how much work is involved with that !

I will look forward to your posts regarding Sooty as I own 945 diesel.Great cars very simple, solid. My vacuum pump noisy but not yet investigated.I have induction roar from K&N filter and modified airbox opened up to under wing inlet and holes in front of the box. This was defineatly worth doing as was ditching the CAT from the exhaust.

This isn't my first Volvo. 20 years ago I grafted a 2.5 Nissan Cab Star engine into a 265 GLE and learned a valuable lesson. Diesel engine + petrol gearbox is a no go. The gap between 2nd and 3rd was not good for towing a heavy caravan fine solo but I needed a work horse.

My tow car/truck is now a 1994 4.2 VX 80 series Toyota Land Cruiser so no problems there. The Volvo is just a fun runabout to collect veg oil and do the donkey work saving the miles on the Toyota.

I have had a peek at the heater Steve, Sooty is a manual converted to Auto so the clutch pedal is already out of the way. Are you saying this matrix slides out sideways ? Not encased in the blower unit ?

Good to see a new owner posting updates of how they're doing with the car

I'm a d24 owner myself. I'm the headcase who dropped one into a 960 (in my signature) replacing a silky smooth straight-6 petrol for... Well, a d24!!

I'd be interested to know how much you got your injectors for, I'm sure at least one of mine in leaking, although it still starts on the button, just a little smoky.

You could definitely be one to have their brain picked during your stay!!

Welcome aboard.

Steve

On my one at least once the clutch pedal the pipes to the matrix and the cover that holds it into the case are removed it should slide out.
It's a case of not all models are the same I think. There some pictures on here and I think I might have one of my car somewhere.

The first time I stripped the dash out the matrix wasn't the problem it was the heater valve which made taking it all apart even more annoying.

You will find more info if you search heater matrix but some of the pictures might have gone.

Hope I'm not breaking any rules putting this up but this guy has a very good reputation on the Land Cruiser forum for service, price and quality even for his non genuine stuff.

Here's what I have coming http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=281203267862 here's what I'll be setting them up with. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=221281517759

Aye, I had a look once I'd seen your thread.

6 nozzles for less than £100 is pretty good!

So are you buying the pop tester to make sure they're right before you fit them?

Also, I noticed they're not listed for the 940 past '92 I think. Not sure if the spec changed after then or not.

Nope got the pop tester 8 months ago to test the Toyotas injectors as I was running on 5 and a half pots just not bad enough to crack a pipe and find out for sure which one. The price for having them tested by a spotty youth was about the same as the tester.

So having at the time 3 motors with bio friendly injectors ( now four ) I thought it would be a good investment . I was VERY surprised at the quality of the tester already paid for itself and now going in to profit.

Well worth it then

Do you have a collection of shims then to set the pop pressure properly??
