Default V50 running like a dog...intermittently

Hi Everyone, new to the forum but have been hovering around for months. Hope you are all well.

I have a question, i have googled this and searched the forum to death but nothing seems to match my issues. I did a full service on my 58 plate V50 2.0D R-Design using genuine volvo parts and recommended oil but since the service my car has developed a very intermittent fault. However i left the glow plugs as i was advised these willbe fine??

Now, the car starts fine, no smoke upon start up or under heavy boost and she will run fine until the issue arises, and that is when approaching a stop the idle is very very lumpy, almost feels like a cylinder has dropped off. i cannot pinpoint when it does it, its after coming off of motorways, coming out of a 30mph limit etc so nothing specific but jeez it feels bad.

Also boost can feel a bit "wolowy" but again intermittent, sometimes she pulls like a train other times wont pull skin of of a rice pudding. There is a whoosh type noise coming from passenger side occasionally. the idle doesnt hunt up and down on rev counter, but the engine just shakes the car as its trying to stall.

Attempted fixes are as follows:
removed ETM and cleaned
tried a different ETM
Removed EGR pipe and cleaned, but not EGR itself (half a job i know)
Unplugged EGR but not blocked off
Cleaned MAF sensor
Cleaned the air temp sensor and the other thing in the ETM
Visual inspection of boost pipes etc, nothing found
been through a tank and a half of Diesel
tried redex injector cleaner additive.
checked all electrical connectors around the working space when i did the service, all are fine.

Tomorrow she is booked in for a diagnostics read so will report back from that. I disconnected MAF sensor whilst running to make sure engine light works, and it did but when the issues are happening she thinks she is fine!

Also mine doesnt have the DPF thank goodness. Any help/advice on anything i have over looked would be awesome!

Thanks,
Mike

Have you cleaned the throttle body? Also check for air bubbles in fuel line if you did the fuel filter. Make sure no breather pipes have come apart or have been squashed by the oil filter housing as have had that happen to me before! As you haven't got a dpf, you may as well blank the egr off and disconnect the plug to it to stop the engine light coming on, but that will show on a diag test so see what comes up before you do that!

Thanks for your reply!

Ok so results are in...... Nothing showing on Diagnostics at all, she thinks she is fine. the only codes that showed up was from me disconnecting the MAF and EGR.

The mechanic recons there was a recall for the injectors software update as he things the injectors are firing at the wrong time, but ever so slightly out. The ecu doesnt appear to be "learning" the injector wear.

I have called Caffyn's Volvo as the car has a history there and they are saying nothing is outstanding on the car at all. just waiting for a price from them to re program the injectors.

Update: Caffyns have now got back to me, quoting around £300 to assess the issue, however they have advised the injectors cannot be programmed and therefore injectors will need to be replaced. Now, im not entirely sure its the injectors at fault. I may run some redex through to see if there is a blockage or something, but if injectors are at fault it would be all the time??

My mechanic has advised its lumpy up to 1200rpm then it clears and is fine and dandy, EGR is working as it should and has been tested. another posibility would be a vacuum leak of sorts? im really at a loss here

They're quoting £300.00 to 'assess' the issue?? what does that entail?

I think I would go to a Diesel specialist, if it is something to do with the injectors then they will perform a 'leak off' test and look at duty cycles etc. there's rarely any reports of injector problems on here though.

You say there's a 'whoosh' noise are you sure there's not a boost leak from the turbo outlet piping somewhere? if you hear a whoosh and then the performance drops (coupled with more smoke) then that would point to boost leakage.

yeah the "whoosh" is intermittent like everything else so really hard to replicate. I think over the weekend i will make a little smoke machine and do some leak testing. I will replace the vac hoses from turbo to the little vavle of worms, cant remember what its called. I also think i will just replace the boost pipes for some silicone ones to rule vacuum out entirely.

Volvo said they charge a flat rate for the "assessment which includes a VIDA test, smoke test and driving. Once that has been completed it will be £75+VAT p/h so i figure, i will do the leg work myself and narrow everything down, then take it to a diesel specialist.

So frustrating trying to get anything out of the main steelers, local garages dont have VIDA, only snap on and bosch kit for diagnostics. I may even buy a vida thing myself if the need arrises, will still be in pocket compared to getting the stealer to do it!

Thanks for all your help/advice so far, i will report back over the weekend with any results.

With the absence of an Engine Check Light I'd say this was an external issue rather than anything with the sensors and ECU. Hope you get on ok, the smoke test is a good idea.

thanks mate, im going to need all the luck i can get with this one.

Just drove it round the block and on the deceleration its making a metallic grinding noise noise until you press the clutch ten lumpy tickover. if you accelerate the noise also stops, so im thinking could this be engine mounts? could that cause the engine to "excessively wobble" on idle occasionally? or am i trying to hard to find a problem?

ive bought a new set of glow plugs so will tackle that tomorrow, and from what i can see, egr needs to come off so i will make a proper blanking plate for that whilst im in there. then its onto the smoke testing for leaks from turbo upward. i will also try and leak test the vacuum lines before replacing them but its only like £2 per meter for some fancy coloured stuff!
