Default Permanently disable s/s

Is there any option to permanently disable stop start, or to set it to be off on starting the car? I don’t mind how permanent (pulling a fuse, cutting a wire etc.).

I have calculated the cost saved per year for me. Assuming diesel is 115.9p/l, idle fuel consumption 0.1 gal/hr, 5 seconds per stop start, 10 stop starts per day, £150 per main battery, 36 month average battery life.

With the above assumptions, the cost saving in fuel assuming zero additional fuel to start is £2.67 per year (very upper bound). If the battery lasts 55.5 days longer by not using start stop, the full cost of fuel is saved by not using it.

If you assume that half the fuel saved is used in restarting and the cost of wear/tear on starter is reduced, the inconvenience of the car stalling when you roll up to a junction is eliminated, then it makes absolutely no sense to use stop start at all.

Surely the point of stop/start is to minimise emissions, particularly when queuing in urban areas?

The manufacturer’s point for stop-start is to minimise emissions. I would agree with that and use it if it didn’t constantly annoy the crap out of me. As the cost saving is negligible, I turn it off every time I start the car.

The original question was whether I could do this permanently rather than at every start (which I will do unless I can turn it off altogether).

Hi I Would assume that your vehicle is an auto as is mine and I also find that the s/s is annoying in 99% of situations . I also try to make sure I switch it off as soon as the engine is started .
If you do a search on YouTube there is a device available that will disable the s/ s and also allow the tailgate to be opened and closed from the remote , assuming that you have a power tailgate.
Hope this helps

Have one of these on my 2016 XC60.

Not cheap but I thought worth it. Delivery from Russia was very quick with tracking update all the way

Yup during the WLTP tests...... and no use in real world

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worldw...driving_cycles

You can see during the urban part the vehicle spends 26.5% of the time stationary, so if you turn the engine off you reduce your emissions in the test. I don't spend that much time stationary every time I am at traffic lights, the stop start is very tedious and gets turned off as soon as I start the engine. The only except is I leave it on at drive throughs so I can hear the person at the window (saves reaching for the key!) (this is on a VW), none of my Volvos are new enough to have had stop/start.

On a slightly related note, if you look at the urban MPG for your vehicle and remove about 26.5% you will find it is fairly close to what you actually get.....
