2016 XC60 Timing Belt Tensioner/Pulley change?
My local Volvo dealership (now lost the franchise) advised me that the Timing Belt Tensioner and pulley needed to be changed on my D5 engine at 54000 miles. However I can find no mention of this on the downloaded service schedule. I can only see the belt change at 108k miles. Can anyone confirm this? Any ideas on costs?
Thanks |

The timing belt doesn't need to be replaced until the car is 10 years old or has 108k on it (Whichever comes first, its a big service). On this major service service though, multiple parts are replaced; The timing belt, timing belt tensioner, idler, auxiliary belts & the main auxiliary belt tensioner. I don't know what the mileage is on your vehicle, but if its approaching 54k, then it just needs a new aux belt (I suspect this is what the garage means, as you car isn't five years old, but may have close to or above 54k miles?). ****Note, your car may actually have two belts (a main aux belt & a separate one for the air conditioning). The air conditioning belt (Costs £27 extra), doesn't need an extra tensioner, as it fit tightly around the pulleys. You can leave the aux belt tensioner if you want until the 10 year/108k service, but personally, I change the aux belt tensioner every time I change both the aux belts (every 5 years or 54k, whichever comes first). The tensioner itself (if purchased on its own) costs around £60 for a genuine part, which if replaced every five years/54k (whichever comes first) means it equates to £12 per year... That won't even buy you a box of decent brand cigarettes nowadays! Although, I believe you can buy a kit that comes with a new aux belt & tensioner on Ebay from a Volvo trade seller for between £75 & £90 plus postage (Best to message the seller below & he'll confirm which one you need exactly, as there's more than one variant). Like I said above, I change the air con belt as well as the main aux belt & tensioner every 5 years/54k too, so that's an extra £27 for the a/c belt plus postage. If it was my car, my personal preference would be to change both aux belts (main belt & a/c belt) plus the aux belt tensioner, just for peace of mind. I've used this seller linked below before on a few occasions... Fantastic service & very reasonable trade prices. Tel: 0191 274 2100 (Just phone, tell them the parts you need & they'll confirm which ones are correct by your reg number). https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/Volvopart...cat=2316362018 So, parts wise, you're looking around £100-£110 plus postage for genuine Volvo parts using the above seller (That's for the aux belt kit (Aux belt, including tensioner & the extra a/c belt if your car has it). Obviously, if a garage is doing the work for you, they'll add their labour costs onto the job & maybe a little extra to the parts too (if they order them). I reckon you'd be looking around £150-£200 including parts & labour for an independent garage to the job for you.

Just had the lot done recently at Hortons. Cambelt kit, AUX belt and tensioner, AC belt. Car has just hit 92000m and is 7 years old.
Albeit 3 years and 16000m early, Its something I just wanted done. Great service and advice. The cost was £290 for parts, £129 labour then VAT on top. |
